Minolta X-700 | Maxxmum 7000 | Dynax 7000i - Guestbook/Message Board

Each of these three featured Minolta SLR camera models represent an era of its own to lead and has great influence over the entire photographic community. The Frame Counter of my x-700 doesn't go back to the start but will go half way and wthen when taking picutres I don't know how many more I have, once it reaches 36 exposures. How do I get it to rewind all the way back, preferrably without having to wait until I put another role in?

I own a Minolta X-700 that continues to serve me very well. At this time I want to buy an autowinder, but I don't know what to ask for, where to look, or how much to expect to pay. Please reply with information that will point me in the right direction. Thanks. -Andrew

REcently I had a Minolta Dynax 7000i stolen. I bought the camera in the mid 1990s for about £380 I think. Does any one know what would be the cost of an equivalent standard camera today please? Ian Prentice

Phil:

The X-300/370/570/700 were designed for amateur use, were built with average-quality components, and at this point are beginning to show their age. Note that internal components were further cheapened over the years, especially after production was offshored outside of Japan. I do not recommend buying them off ebay unless they have been proven to be recently serviced and guaranteed to work. If you have installed fresh, correct batteries and are still experiencing problems, there may be other gremlins. These cameras can have a real problem with poor-quality electrolytic capacitors that generally begin to leak and fail after a few years.

If your camera shutter/mirror have locked, fresh batteries won't operate the mechanism, the capacitors may need replacing. When the caps leak they cause the printed area of the board to short out, in some cases destroying the circuit entirely. If the camera has power, but when the shutter release is pressed the led display blanks out and doesn't come on that most likely the problem is the shutter release capacitor. If the led does not come on at all than it could be the top capacitor. If the LED display blinks when the shutter release button is pressed or if it just stays lit than the problem is most likely not a capacitor problem but a break in an integrated circuit.

The easiest way to tell if a cap needs to be replaced is to examine the base. Some early X-700s also have tantalum caps that are usually ok, but you are looking for the electrolytic versions. Check the base of the cap, if it is electrolytic and going bad often there will be some signs of leakage, possibly corrosion, or odor. Leaking capacitors smell like ammonia. After removing the cap, clean the board in rubbing alcohol. Film advance problems on the X-series may come from bits of film jamming advance, the previously mentioned electronic or shutter module problems, or a damaged film advance mechanism, which on these cameras is fairly light-duty (plastic components).. You can replace with parts from another parts camera.

Shutter malfunctions and shutter sticking (partial frame photos) on the these cameras may result from oil migrating onto the shutter magnets, combined with dirt, it gunks up the mechanism. A good CLA by a repair shop should fix this problem, clean out all the old dried lubricant, and lubricate dry components to reduce wear. Shutter magnets can usually be cleaned but sometimes lose their kick and must be replaced. Sometimes the fabric shutter curtains can stick the shutter in high humidity conditions. HTH, Ron.

Hi people I have owned a x-700 for 2 or 3 years ago, when i bought it off my toutor in tech at the time, when he was up grading to digital. it has served me well taking photos of motor sport, land scape and everyting in between, for university and plesure. now i have a problem with it, and if any one can help it would be great. the other night i was on a bridge over a motor way taking pictures of light streeks on a long exposure, well when i went to change the film i took one out and then went to put another film on, and it just wouldnt wind on, ( like i hadnt pressed the shutter to take a photo) but i tried that and nothing happend, just like it had jamed.

i brought it to a friend of mine today and he had a fiddle and thought it was the batterys, so we changed them, didnt make a diffrence, i have noticed when it is turend on i get the light meeter comeing on but once i touch the shutter button the lights disapear. and im back to square one. does anyone know whats happing or how to fix it? i dont mind speming a bit of money on the camera but if it is going to cost a bit i may as well get a second hand one off ebay or somewhere. or invest in a good digital camera, tho i do like film and the art of processing and devloping Thanks Phil
