I have a maxxum 7000 which has repeatedly given me great pics and reliability, however, this past yeat I've had a problem getting thru a roll of film before zapping the batteries. I went thru a process which confirms that I can only get thru 12 to 15 shots before I hear a sound of the film winding motor at turn on and then the display just flashes. If I install a new set of alkalyne batts the camera will start up and take pics just fine for about 12 to 15 more pics before draining batts to the point of not enough power to start up again, just the sound of the rewinding motor then flashing display, no function at this point. Any thoughts or suggestions??

Art: It sounds like the film load sensor is blocked or inoperative. You might check to see there is no dirt or other material in the interior film compartment. Otherwise you will have to get professionally repaired, parts are starting to be hard to come by for this model. The 400si is a cheaper consumer SLR with plastic lens mount etc. It has other issues of aperture control and diaphragm breaking often, so you might want to move up to a higher-level camera instead of getting a repair.

I own a Minolta SLR Maxxum 400si Camera.
I am getting an ERROR message on the LCD read out that says:
HELP. This occurs when I try to put a new role of film in, close the loading door and turn the swith from lock to on. It acts and sounds as if it wants to transport the film to picture Number 1. However the film media in camera never moves.
I can clear the HELP error which is displayed on LCD by removing the battery and reinserting it, only for the cycle to start again.
I have installed a brand new battery. Can any one help me and tell me how to fix this problem.
I would be most pleased.
Art Richter

I have an old Maxxum AF 7000 SLR that has been used very little and don't really want to give it up. But I am very interested in the new D-SLR's. If I purchase one of the new Minolta Digitals can I use my old lens on the body?

I'm looking for a place to have my 7000AF repaired. It fell from it's seemingly stable perch and the rewind apparatus was broken off.

Dear Jamie:

Just an honest question, have you read the owner's manual, or read the X-700 information on this site? If you did you would see the answers to your questions.

As to astrophotography, I suggest you google for recommendations on suitable 35mm cameras, there are a lot of enthusiast websites discussing the topic. A general view is that the X-700 is not very suitable for such work, main reasons are that it has no MLU, some definite mirror slap and that it relies on battery power to hold it's shutter open on bulb - not a good recipe for long time exposure especially on cold nights. Most astrophotog people with film cameras end up with a camera that holds shutter open mechanically (no battery power used).
