Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Minolta X-700 | Maxxmum 7000 | Dynax 7000i - Guestbook/Message Board

Each of these three featured Minolta SLR camera models represent an era of its own to lead and has great influence over the entire photographic community. Unlike the two great Minolta cameras of yesteryears in the XK/XM/X1 and the XD-7, these newer series of Minolta classic served a different segment of users. On December 18, 2002, Jo Pool wrote the Message Board about her difficulty in using her new (newly acquired?) Maxxum 7000i, and requested for assistance in operating her camera.

I'd be glad to help, based on my experience with my Minoltas - the Dynax (European version) 7000i launched in 1988 and 700si launched in 1993, both of which are very capable cameras, then and now. My statement is not meant to answer all her concerns in one sitting, rather, I foresee that it will be a continuing process until she felt confident with the controls of her camera, and eventually derive satisfaction over the results of her shots. The following basic information from her would be helpful:

1) What equipment does she have - lenses (brand and focal length), flashgun and accessories?
2) What does she mean by her statement that "pictures are not coming out.."?
3) Does she have an instruction manual?

Jo need not be defensive by saying that her camera is "only used at school programs and family gatherings." Any location is important when one records an event for posterity. Even professionals use lots of film just to get one good shot regardless of the location! What really matters is to learn the basics, and then use this knowledge well. Meantime, Jo should continue with her shooting sessions, just press the "P" mode and let the camera do the thinking. The "P" stands for programmed mode whereby the camera chooses a shutter speed and aperture to suit not only the lighting conditions but also the lens in use. The "P" also stands for panic, which is used whenever one gets confused while operating the camera. Pressing the "P" button returns the camera to its default settings, i.e., to a fully automatic programmed mode including auto focus.

I have no doubt that very soon, after several communications between Jo and the rest of us, she will know her camera better and better. She should consider yourself lucky that she has a camera with features to match her knowledge as it grows. My advice to Joy - Don't ever part with it - the 7000i is not only a classic, it is a camera for all seasons. (I am also offering my help in maintining your Board. Keep up the good work). Rudy

Hi, I have a Minolta SLR-TTL Minolta 7000 and 9000. I've purchased two Minolta CG-1000 off Ebay in the past several months (working units). Everytime I touch the button that takes the picture (and focuses) the LED on the Minolta 4000 Flash goes out. I have to turn the camera off then back on to get the LED on the flash to reappear. I'm using automatic focus on both cameras. Should I be using a different setting to get the CG-1000 to work? I've also tried using both my 4000 flash on the CG-1000 with my 2800 flash on the camera, same problem. I have a AI-1000 and used it on my camera with the 4000 flash on the CG-1000 and the led on the flash goes out every time. I do have a manual, but new at this. Thanks in advance, Dave (you may email me)

I have just replaced the lithium battery in my Maxxum 7000. It's been going for 16 years but I decided to change the battery anyway. NOW I have a problem! The camera doesn't work anymore. The mirror appears to be halfway in the flipped up position. I get ZERO response out the camera now. I have NO IDEA why it suddenly unresponsive but I'm sure it has something to do with the mirror not being in the proper position. Any ideas? Anyone?

I have a Minolta X-700 camera since around 1982, and I really am pleased with it, get great pictures, even at night without a flash. I had it overhauled once, needing a new exposure meter. I need to know if this camera can still be purchased new. A couple of years ago I noticed some in camera store windows, but I no longer see them. I dropped the camera once (just before I'd had it rebuilt) and the outside curvature of the lens is slightly damaged, though it does no affect the quality pictures I get. I use a light filter. What is today's 2003 equivalent to the old Minolta X-700, in the Minolta brand or other brand, if and when I may have to replace this old camera? I have not decided to go into digital as yet, since I do not have all the other things one really needs or should have that makes digital the camera to have. I still like using film. Email me at VANS_WAY@yahoo.com. Toby Van Buren

Help. Fell on top of my X700. Broke the rewind knob off but the camera still takes great shots. Where can I purchase a new rewind knob? Currently living in Saigon so replies from the region are most appreciated. Cheers - Charles

I have a Minolta X-700 that has an intermittant shutter and if I put it into the freezer it will work until it warms up a little. Suspect a component is off tolerance or bad...maybe the capacitors? If the cap, can someone please tell me how to access the part so I can replace it. I have an electronics and soldering back ground. Don't have a repair manual and not sure where they are located...... Thanks a bunch

Hi all, I replaced the infamous capacitor in my X-700 but it did not fix the frozen shutter plague. Does anyone know of any other thing(s) I could look at? Thanks much, I'm getting frustrated!! Arthur

Owner of Minolta Maxxum 7000 bought new in 1985. Also own Minolta Maxxum 2800 AF flash. 1) How do I know when internal battery is dead? 2) Is this something I can change myself or do I need to send it "away" for service? 3)Lately my photos are half dark/half light when I use my flash. ALL camera and flash batteries (with exception of internal battery) are new. Camera is set on PROGRAM mode.Flash is on correct film speed. When I take the photo the "ok" sign on the back of flash does not light up. ANY help is appreciated. Thanks so much
