Minolta X-700 | Maxxmum 7000 | Dynax 7000i - Guestbook/Message Board

Each of these three featured Minolta SLR camera models represent an era of its own to lead and has great influence over the entire photographic community. Unlike the two great Minolta cameras of yesteryears in the XK/XM/X1 and the XD-7, these newer series of Minolta classic served a different segment of users. Kris: 7000 flash sync is only 1/100 max, fairly slow even for that era.

Internal battery for the Maxxum 7000 AF. These cameras have a CR2016 lithium “coin” battery located on the right side of the camera. (By the way, repair people always refer to the right and left of a camera as you are holding it for use.) Remove the battery holder, and you will see a sliver plate held on by six Phillips head screws. Remove the plate and the battery is visible. Just note that the screws are different lengths depending on if they are in the front or back. The battery is available at any well-stocked drugstore or Radio Shack. Its purpose is to maintain counter settings and ISO data if the main batteries are removed mid roll.

"I'll be waxing maudlin about my 5D in another 20 years time.."

I hate to burst your bubble, Damien, but that's unlikely as hell. Most DLSRs are not designed to last beyond the expected lifespan of their parts, maybe 5-6 years or so, if you're lucky. Did you know that some unfortunate DSLR owners haven't had their cameras last a few months without breakdown, sometimes multiple breakdowns. And there is also the fragility concern, if you drop it or get any moisture inside the camera.

The fact that parts availability will dry up after awhile (even though Sony is taking over customer support, no more K-M DSLR parts will be made, ever) makes things even tougher. As as soon as you need that no-longer-produced flex circuit, microprocessor, IC, power unit or AF module or CF card receptor assembly, your 5D will be a paperweight.

Nihlajan: You can get foam strip material from Jon Goodman, Jon_Goodman@yahoo.com, he's also on ebay. Any good thin foam, neoprene, or felt material you find at a craft shop also should work (adhere with contact cement).

Sharon: No. I read about a guy once with a 7000 that got multiple exposure shots by marking the film leader and reloading in exactly the same place. That takes a lot of planning and care. The 700si has it built in.

Kudos to the creators of the Minolta 7000 site.

I've owned a Minolta 7000 since 1986 and I am just now working my way scanning through 20 years worth of photographs that it has faithfully and accurately produced. No wonder I'm getting emotional: staring at images of my boys growing up to men, pets no longer with us, second honeymoons... you get the picture, huh?

So it is with more than a litle sadness that I finally bought another SLR camera last weekend. Strangely it is the very last model that will ever be produced by Konica-Minolta, the Dynax 5D.

Although all my original Minolta AF lenses I bought with the 7000 _can_ be mounted and used with the Dynax 5D (an amazing thing in these days of rapid technical obsolescence), the 1.5 multiplier effect on the focal length when used on a digital SLR makes them fairly strange. According to my calculations my original Minolta 28mm/1.4 wide-angle becomes a 42mm lens, and my Minolta 55mm diameter 50mm lens becomes a 75mm lens. Has anyone experimented with these lenses on a digital body? Oh well, I got an 18mm-70mm (DT)zoom and a 75mm-300mm AF(D) with the Dynax 5D, so I'm pretty set, I guess. I wonder if I'll be waxing maudlin about my 5D in another 20 years time? Since Sony have bought the camera-related intellectual property from K-M then something interesting and unique may survive into the future. I may be buying a Sony 'holocam' in 2026 (if I can still see!!)

Cheers.

Damien

Sue your X-700 lenses are the old Minolta manual-focus mount and will not fit the later Minolta AF mount for AF film and digital cameras. Minolta, of course is now kaput as far as photography goes, being bought out by Sony. If you already have a Minolta DSLR, you can find Minolta AF lenses on the used marketplace - they should drop in price as more people leave Minolta brand, but make certain that function and optical condition is guaranteed. If you don't already have Minolta DSLR, you might want to consider again your DSLR choice and try another brand now instead of later.
