To Siddhartha: Nikon recommends to clean the lenses only by gently (!!) rubbing the surface with a soft cotton cloth, if brushing/air flushing is not effective. In case it is smeared, soak the cotton with pure ethyl alcohol before rubbing, and dry it by air flushing. The mirror should be cleaned only by air flushing. Never touch it with fingers.

To: K. Siddhartha,

The frame counter on the F3 resets when you open the camera back and close it again. Just raising the rewind crank will not reset the counter. There is a small pin in the camera body that is depressed by a raised area on the camera back. This pin is located next to the top of the camera back, just below the frame counter. If your frame counter does not reset when the camera back is opened and closed again, then this pin may be stuck or broken. If you are not able to free it up, you will probably need to take the camera to a shop and let a technician repair it.

Hope this solves the problem.

Walt

The release button on my F3hp lens mount feels slacky or it has less spring tension. Is this common to almost all F3 when its in used condition? Is it expensive to replace the string underneath it? Thanks

Ryan, The F3's LCD panel will display the "8o" you describe until the frame counter is advanced to "1". It will display that if set to 1/80 sec or less. If set to a speed longer than 1/80, it will display that speed. Try advancing the film advance lever until the frame counter reads "1" and see if the problem goes away. You can do this without film in the camera.

I have an F3 HP with serial no. 1725412 that I bought in mint condition but 2nd hand. Just installed 2 Duracell type 76 batteries. I checked each one, they measure 1.58 v. I cannot get the LCD on the inside of the viewfinder to read the correct shutter speed EXCEPT when it is 1/60 or lower. If you put it on 1/125 and higher, it only says "8o" (an 8 and a small zero). Does any one have any clues for me as to troubleshooting this problem? Thank you. Ryan Solberg rsolberg@jobview.com

I recently bought a finder eyepiece for my F3 which hasn't got one since I bought it (used). I noticed that that is a glass element in the middle attached to the rubber. So when I screw it on, this will be an additonal to the one which is already attached to the finder. Any problems associated with focussing, refraction ?

Marc, I believe the Vivitar hotshoe allows for TTL, although I do not have experience with it. Nikon makes the AS-17 for F3 TTL which the AS-4 does not, but it is a bit pricey. Yes, the 'Full' means maximum power from the flash and using that for close subjects most probably will 'wash out' the pictures. I suggest you make exposures using different settings and record them for future reference. Sometimes due to age, the calibration of either camera or flash may be a bit off, so whatever the settings that should be OK in theory is now slightly different. Just my opinion.
