Hi Jon, I think I want to stock that part as well, just in case. The price seems reasonable. My LCD is still fine, on body # 1321XXX. Roz

Please help. Does anyone know where I can locate a spare F3 top plate (or any other spares) without going through Nikon UK. Antony - London England

Hi Roz, Funny you should discussing this. I got a bit worried last week and thought with the F3 no longer produced, I might buy a LCD panel and put away somewhere for when mine eventually packs it in. It's about the only item in the body that has a finite life. I was quoted $NZ121 (about $US50) which I thought was a great price although fitting it would be an extra cost. Maybe Nikon weren't joking when they mention in the manual "replacement of this element at a small charge". BTW mine is an old F3 (#1221XXX) bought in 82 and the LCD panel is perfect - no loss of contrast that I can perceive.
May it long continue...... Cheers Jon

Good idea T. Somehow it seems the LCD needs to be 'energised' after extended periods of storage. Perhaps other F3 users can share their experiences with 'fading' LCDs, particularly those on earlier F3 bodies which are some 18-20 years old vintage. I think this is one of the major part of the camera which concerns F3 users. Other parts of the F3 look like they will last forever, with just the occasional CLA.

If we ever need to change the LCD, hopefully it will not cost too much, as in having to change entire circuit boards. However despite the LCD numerals not appearing clearly at times, my F3's meter remains accurate.

Thanks again Roz. I didn't realise the dial only comes up a few millimeters. The F3HP that I'm using right now, hasn't been used for about 4 years I think, so maby I should use it a bit longer before replacing the lcd to see if it gets better contrast after some use. That lamp also doesn't sound too bad, with a tripod that is.

T, yes, the little LCD illuminator is rather 'crude' by today's standard. Some F3 users rather use a small torchlight to illuminate the LCD! By the way, the LCD has a definite lifespan, and the contrast do fall due to age. In my case, the 'M' character, while using it in manual mode, will not appear clearly in the first hour of use after storing the camera for a few weeks. A few hours later, it will regain its original black colour.

The ASA / ISO requires a bit of force to lift, before turning it to the desired speed. It feels as though the dial is attached to a spring. When it is raised the ASA can be changed throughout the available range, unless some dirt e.g. fine sand or something has got in between the dial.

Thanks I now realised that the button needs a bit strenght to go down. However when the inner lamp is lit, I can't make out anything of the lcd. The light is right behind the lcd and eliminates all contrast from the it. Guess I should get the lcd replaced.

Still I'm confused about the iso dial. What do I need to do before I turn it? The instructions here say that I must lift the dial(I guess) up, but it doesn't seem to bugde. What is it exactly that I need to lift in order to turn the dial?

T, now you've mentioned the 'notorious' red illuminator botton! It is a pain to push it down, particularly with the fingernails. Indeed it needs to be pressed a bit for it to work, so if you've pushed it to the limits and nothing shows (while the LCD numerals in the viewfinder is 'on'), it's probably gone.

About the ISO/ASA speed dial, going by your description, there should be nothing wrong with it. Just align the desired speed with the indicator. The ISO/ASA numbers do follow as you turn the dial.

G'day. I´m having some problems adjusting the ISO speed with F3HP. I'm supposed to lift the shell off the dial, right? Well, when I try to pull it up, it only moves slightly and the number dial seems to be moving with it (hope I didn't break anything yet).

Also another question, it's about the red illuminator button. How much is it supposed to go down? It doesn't seem to move at all so either it's broken or I'm doing something wrong. The power is on and I've pressed the shutter release button slightly show the readings are showing (when the ambient lighting is appropriet).
