Joe, I seriously doubt your prism is the problem. After all, it's just a chunk of polished glass. Take the prism off and thoroughly clean the eyepiece portion and the part against the screen with a good quality lens cleaner and a clean microfiber cloth. Pay particular attention to the part over the aperture ring on the lens. After cleaning, examine the bottom surface and eyepiece area for scratches. If they are badly scratched, then you mightwant to consider replacing the prism.

You'll also want to remove the screen and clean it thoroughly using the lens cleaner and cloth. If the cleanings don't resolve the problem, you might want to change the screen. I think there are 16-18 different screens available from Nikon for the F3, and more from 3rd party sources such as Beattie. These are relatively inexpensive, and can be gotten from a number of sources. E-mail me directly and I'll be happy to recommend a couple I'm pleased with. By the way, the LCD light on my F3HP has been out for a number of years now, and I find I don't really miss it. Regards, Walt

I've been using the F3 since it came out, never been too seriously until the last few years. Have not done any major maintenance on it. But having seen other camera's (AF) so clear and crisp through the viewfinder, whereas mine seems "frosted" (exaggerated), and the LCD light no longer working, and aperture info display is like a torn and worn, I wondered if I should replace the viewfinder (prism) and the focusing screen.
Any suggestion?

I just purchased a Nikon F2A (DP11 meter) and a Nikon F3 (HP model). I am in need of a manual for each of these cameras - PDF format preferred. Any and all help will be greatly
appreciated.

Richard

Nikon stated parts for pro-class bodies will be 10 years duration. Assuming if it has been discontinued from year 2000, so it should eb still available within the decade. LCD contrast factor was a little over emphasized, my F3/T still works well since 1983 (20+ yeasr ?). Help it helps.

Hi, I'm wanting to buy a second-hand F3HP and am concerned about the life of the viewfinder LCD before it loses contrast. Anyone know how long its life is normally and more importantly what it would cost to replace by a Nikon agent, assuming the parts are still available. Mike

Hi guys.I have just bought an F3 which is in unused condition, what I would now like to know is when it was made? The number is 1233998. The guy I bought it from said that it was one of the last made but I doubt this. Also can any one out there tell me-- was the F3 unaltered throughout its 20 year run or were mods made by Nikon. thanks for an excellent site. Peter.

For all F3/MD4-pack users and buyers get lost of it:
The body MD coupling cover is still available via Nikon. Costs: 12 EUR (15 to 20 USD) and should require a fortnight to be delivered.

Tim, Someone asked that same question several months ago, but I cannot remember the answer. Go back through the previous posts on this site and you will find the answer. I'm not sure exactly how far back it was, though. Happy hunting. Walt

hi everyone, ive recently picked up a F3P/MD4 combo. i had figured because of its rugged build id take it for some climbing photography. basically im looking for advice about cases: i was looking for snout case or similar that can handle the high eyepoint prism and the MD (optionally) without being a giant backpack. both toughness rainproofing are important. what do you guys use? cheers, tim
