To Roland, the special shutter release button was used on the Nikon F3P, so called for its target market for press or professional photographers. The same model also came out as the limited edition model 'F3 Limited'. See the following links for more information:

Hi all, first of all: Great site! I noticed that a lot of the pictures here show F3s (maybe only special models) with a different shutter release button. It is not the shiny metal one with the cable release thread, but a flat dark grey button without the cable release thread. Is this shutter release button part of some special models or can it be purchased seperately? Thanks in advance. Greetings from Frankfurt/Main (Germany), Roland

To Roy: I read somewhere that the F3 consumes a very low amount of power even if the switch is shut off. If I recall correctly, this has something to do with the quartz timing circuitry. Since the current is extremely low, it is almost negligible. As for when the switch is at 'on' position but shutter release is not depressed, from my understanding, the camera is effectively 'off' after some 16 seconds or so, and battery drain should only be as much as mentioned earlier.

Since some power is consumed even in 'off' position, some may wonder what will happen if batteries are removed to prevent leakage for long periods of storage. There is no mention in the F3 manual saying that batteries must always be installed. As such there should be no worries. But a previous posting by Harry may raise some concerns. 6 years in storage and now there seems to be problems getting it to work. I hope Harry has solved the problem as unfortunately I can't suggest much. To Mike: I think it's best if you get it checked again at where you had it for servicing. I suppose they would have some kind of warranty for the service done, unless they say it is a new problem(!). I would prefer an authorised Nikon service facility as they would be in the best position to diagnose the problem, and spare parts, if needed. RozKL

I have just switched from an FE to an F3. If the master switch is left on will there be a battery drain if the shutter release is not depressed? Any assistance is appreciated.
