After using a F3/MD4 combo for several yrs I bought a F3hp. The MD4 would not work on it, the film will advance 1 frame but the shutter will only trip with the manual release. I bought another MD4 and same problem. Both work on the non-hp, but not the hp. Any suggestions?

I am looking for a good book on the Nikon F3. I purchased David Busch' book "Digital Field Guide" for my Nikon D80 digital. But I would like to find something like that for the F3 that I just purchased. Any ideas? Please email me with your ideas. Thanks.

I just purchased a "like new" MD-4 motor drive for an F3 which, I have not purchsed yet. My question is this: when I push the shutter down (w/o camera mounted on the MD-4)the motor will not advance in either "s" or "c" mode. However, when I put it in rewind mode, the motors work. Will the MD-4 advance only with a camera attached? I'm trying to figure out if the unit I just purchased does not work, despite it's "like new" consition.

Thank you.

Hi,
I have a min Nikon F3HP. Everything was just fine intil this morning when I reloaded a film and to my utter dismay the shutter release seems to have stayed slightly de-pressed. It now will only fire using the manual release on the front of the camera. Any ideas how to sort this out?
Thanks

Matt

I'm "acquiring", amongst other such stuff, old 60s'-80s' non-plastic cameras. I've got the Pentax X series, the Canon F1 series (not F1N), and am working on the Nikon F series. So far, I've decided that the F4 looks a bit too... kitch(?), so at the moment it's the F3 that ends that series.

The F3 example of interest here is the F3HP/MD4 setup that's apparently so popular. Great outfit for a bang shooter who just want's great negs, and I must admit to the seductiveness of that sort of thing. I generally keep battery caddies separate from the cameras (like guns and ammunition), which is a visual clue to the need to use these rigs regularly even when not in the field.

So yesterday I picked up the F3/MD4, inserted the battery caddy, and.... nothing!. After fiddling with it, wondering just what I'd forgotten, it started to work again. Then I swapped in a hot NiCad pack, and .... nothing! Some fiddling around with it got it working again. The NC pack wasn't as hot as I thought, so I swapped it out for the battery caddy. Again, nothing!

At that point, I separated the camera and drive. The camera had no batteries, which I then added, and it worked just fine. I don't know whether or not MD4s can function without a camera attached (MD2's will), so I've no idea about what may be going on with it.

Then I started looking more closely at the camera, and one of the brass contacts for the drive pins was recessed. The end of a paper clip was a good tester for these contacts, and the rest appeared to resist recessing. But this one contact not only seemed to give way before the clip end, but it didn't return to anything like the same height as the rest.

I figured that with the batteries in the camera, it would function when bolted up to the drive even if the drive did not. Nope, nothing. So now I know I don't have a real handle on what's wrong, but I do know that the errant contact can't be right.

I must assume that this camera can be repaired, although it might be just as well to get another from EBay (not where this came from...), if I can find a really pristine copy. But this certainly doesn't bode well for the F3; both it and the drive were purchased together and the almost flawless condition of both strongly suggests that neither were abused.

I guess my question is whether or not anyone else has had a problem like this (with the F3). Any ideas, anyone?

Bill Tallman
