Marc,

The F3 has no means of determining when you have reached the end of a roll. The only way you know is to watch the frame counter or feel the resistance to advancing the film when you reach the end.

Occasionally I will pull too much film off the cassette when putting a new roll in the camera and I will lose a frame at the end, or only have half-a-frame left. If you're careful putting the leader into the take-up spool and stop when the frame counter reaches "1", you should get all of the exposures you have on the roll.

Since when you close the camera after putting a new roll in, the frame counter is at "-3" or "-2", I have found myself going past frame "1" by just not paying attention to the counter. I've wasted a frame that way, too.

Regards,

Walt

quick question:

is the F3 capable of sensing when it has reached the end of a roll of film? i ask because my ugly old F3, perfect in every other so far inspected respect, failed to advance and shoot after frame 23 on a 24 exposure roll of fuji 100 film... iam sure i got a full stroke on the film lever... when i depressed the shutter release it just felt like mush (no click)...the lever would NOT advance again... so i assumed that was the end and rewound the roll..

thanks for any knowledge, or advice...

To John: The shutter speed of the F3 is automatically set to 1/80 as long as the frame counter has not reached position "1". Thus, it's not possible to squeeze out extra frames from the film, since the first three or four are lost because of deactivation of the metering. One can agree with this kind of philosophy of Nikon or not, but it is so. In order to use these frames, one has to use an extra meter to determine the proper fstop for 1/80.

To Jimmy: I fear it's too late: you should have immersed your camera immediately in tab water after it had fallen into salt water, stored it there for several hours, and then brought it to a repair shop...(according to Nikon's instructions); you might have had a chance then. Main problem is corrosion of electrical contacts.

My Nikon F3 including lens was immersed for several minutes in salt water during a Kayak trip. Some water got into the lens and the camera body. I immediately removed any excess water but a small amount of salt water remained behind in non-easily accessable areas. The shutter worked for several days by manual release. I was not able to get to a repair facility for several days. They informed me that a camera that had been in salt water could not be repairable. The camera appears visually fine but the release button have frozen in place. Can anything be done.

recently a friend sent me his nikon H4 focusing screen to use with his 28-90mm vivitar macro focusing zoom lens... it is a marvelous focusing screen... with the entire surface capable of focusing... here is its nomenclature:

Type H: Clear Fresnel field with microprism focusing pattern over the entire screen area. Permits rapid focusing on any part of the screen with optimum edge-to-edge brightness in poor light. Available in 4 models (H1-H4) corresponding to particular focal length lenses. I am using H2 on my F3T.

my project involves CloseUp photography of small crusteans critters on soft sand - i use various colored spices sprinkled on the sand to achieve different colors/light. my principle lens will be the nikkor 55mm micro f2.8 with the PK13 extension tube for 1:1 aspect...

MY QUESTION...

since i must return this 'loaned' focus screen i would like to get an H screen for myself. i consulted the nikon focus screen compatibility chart and discovered that i would require the H2 for the 55mm mirco... however, the chart does not include a difference, if there is one, when the PK13 extension tube is affixed? actually, the only number that claims EXCELLENT visibility for the 55mm micro is the H2 the H1 reports vignetting... and the H3 and H4 are not even listed for this lens...

does anyone know the answer to this question? does anyone have an H2 focus screen (for F3hp) or know where i may find one? AND am i considering the correct and best focus screen for CloseUp work such as i have described? it sure LOOKS kewl when i examine things thru the view finder...

thanks HEAPS! for your patience and help...

John, I just bought a F3HP (around '86 model according to the serial #) and it's doing the same thing. My framecounter has to advance to approx. frame 12 before the meter starts working. Maybe someone can shed some light on this. Kevin

Greetings. The meter on my 15yo F3HP is always set to 80 (1/80) for the first 4 or 5 frames, even when it is set to higher shutter speeds. Is there a history of this problem? Is the only way to fix it to send it in for a repair? I am able to take exposures from frame 1 to 4 or 5, I just have to guesstimate the aperature for a 1/80 shutter speed. Thanks
