I'm trying to get the most flash capability out of my f3. I understand that the AS-17 will give ttl capability with iso type flashes. My question is: With the AS-17, can I use advanced flash features like auto fill flash (center-weighted) and rear curtain sync? Or are those camera-based functions which are not possible on the f3? Thanks, Ron

James, that's a good question which unfortunately I can't find any other way to close the shutter apart from turning the shutter speed dial as you mentioned. The difference in using the 'T' mode is saving power consumption for very long exposures provided that one uses the mechanical shutter lever to trigger the shutter (and the shutter dial to close). Using the usual shutter button in 'T' or 'B' mode will use up power, although not that very much compared with today's power hungry AF cameras.

I did a lof of night pictures of LT photography. Most of the time, I am operating in bulb mode. Recently, I notice there is also a Time mode "T" that I can use but hate to risk turning the shutter speed ring to register any blur while I turn ( I would need a very careful operation and a damn sturdy tripod.. if I want to get a comfort for myself). Question is, is there any other method that I can unlock from the T setting or operate a similar mechanical setting without the hassel of pressing something and turn a ring ? I

Regarding the rather loose film advance lever: My first Nikon F3 which I bought new in 1982 exhibited some looseness after about 150 rolls of film. I didn't have the MD-4 yet at that time so I used the manual lever exclusively. I had it adjusted when it was sent for a CLA and it reverted to its original firm condition. In a Lab Report of the F3 which was done by Popular Photography magazine back in 1983, it was pointed out that the screws anchoring the lever to the internal mechanism were too small for the tester's liking. There are 4 of the screws and it was suggested that Nikon use longer screws to make it more durable. A diagram of the winding mechanism which I came across recently confirms the usage of these tiny screws which may have contributed to premature looseness of the advance lever.

Albert: Thanks for setting the circular polarizer info straight. I'm pretty technically minded: Is there a website you can point me to that explains this in detail?
