Modern Classic SLRs Series : |
I have my admiration for some of the selective models within the Nikon FE Series. It is sad to realise Nikon doesn't understand what we are looking forward to at times in a SLR body. As the FE series models (Other than the FE-10) have long being discontinued. You may use this site for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experiences among yourself. I recently acquired a FE (# FE4256413) when my father in law passed on, and the shutter is not working properly. The mirror and shutter work in the "B" and "m90" mode but not at any other shutter speed setting. I have installed 2 new 1.5 V Energizer (silver oxide) batteries and the battery life function does not work.
Can you please give me some guidance as to what the problem might be and if I can correct it myself or do I need to send it ouit for repair. If outside repair is required do you have any recommendations?
Respectfully,
John2. From : Scott Carpenter (scott.carpenter@croydon.gov.uk)

Hi there Nikon lovers!! After using digital for the last few years for work and family/travel pix, this morning I got out my FE and turning it over in my hands. This is such a lovely piece of work, made for a purpose, made to last. It's inspired me to go out and start taking a few b/w shots again. My friend who sold it to me said "Its a perfect war correspondents camera"...not that thats what I do! It's never let me down and makes me smile.
FE4226826 (no idea what year - maybe someone could help?)
all the best

I finally managed to get the FE2's rewind knob to pop up, but I don't know what I did. I must have changed my facial expression, or something. It's working fine now. If anybody needs to borrow that knife-edged wooden stick I used, it's available ;-)
This week,I bought a very clean EM body on eBay (for $20.US!). What a sweet little camera! I always liked the size of the Olympus OM series, and the FM,EM, etc series are the same size, only with Nikon lenses fitting them. Now I'm watching eBay for a nice FM body. This could become a nasty habit- collecting one of every Nikon model ever made. Fortunately, I don't have that much money, even at $20 a pop.
Nikon eBay prices are so cheap now it's crazy. I also bought a very clean and optically perfect Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 for $25.US, a 43-86 zoom (not perfect except optically and mechanically) for $21.US, and the same condition 135 f/2.8 for $20.US. I also got a very nice SB-20 Speedlight for another $20.US. Somebody stop me! Between spending so much time on this wonderful site making me love Nikon even more, and spending so much time on eBay buying Nikon stuff because of that love, my life may be ruined.

I've dusted off my FE2 in preparation for taking it on an upcoming trip. Put in fresh batteries and bought a roll of film for testing it, since I haven't used the camera for about a year.
When I got ready to load the film into the camera, I wasn't able to pull up the rewind knob to release the back. Thinking maybe I had to go through the rewinding process for some interconnect to work, I pushed in the rewind button and spun the rewind crank a number of times. Still couldn't pull up the knob. I even used a wooden blade with a sharp edge to gently try to lever the knob up. That didn't work, either; and I didn't want to get brutal on it.
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you solve it?
This is a really good site, and it's been very useful in refreshing my experience with the FE2.5. From : Ivo (digitrix@gmail.com)

i bought my boyfriend an FE2 recently and he was trying to take a picture of the both of us by setting it and then hoping over to take the picture with me. I dont know much about cameras, but hes taken a class or two. Anyways, we would wait for it and it never happened. we tried a few times to get it to take the picture. do you have any idea what could have happened? It worked for him taking pictures from behind the camera, just not when it came to timing a picture for us.
thanks for any insight.

Alright, I have picked up yet another FE. I love these cameras, they just work no matter what you do to them! But on my most recent version, the needles in the needle match are all askew. Not so much the meter needle, but the shutter needle.
The problem is that it always displays the shutter speed two stops faster than it really is, i.e. 1/60 actual and on the dial is shown as 1/250 in the viewfinder.
How do i fix this issue, or am i pretty much going to have to live with it? Its easy to work with, but still pretty annoying, and one reason these bodies are so great is that you can use them so easily without moving it away from your eye.
So if there is any way to fix this, i am all game!8. From : Paul Flinn (pflinn@ksu.edu)

I have a Nikon FE2 and the mirror damper foam is deteriorating. Where can I buy replacement foam?
Thanks,

Hi Jfrederic: I'm not a rabid Nikon buff, but my feeling is that there must be some bad luck involved. I'm sure that a runaway motor can cause some damage to a camera; the Nikon FE is fairly robust, anything that breaks it would certainly break most SLRs made today.
As for the 50mm lens, if the problem is a loose feeling focus ring, my guess is that this is not a quality issue but a need for service. As a lens ages the grease in the focus helical dries out and the space that it had taken up becomes a gap. With cleaning and lubrication the lens should be like new again.
If a manual focus Nikkor lens feels inadequate, stay far, far away from the lenses that come on today's $1000 - plus digitals..... they really are awful by comparison (though their optical quality is generally good)10. my question is can motor back ruin your camera? i bought new FE a few years ago and at that time bought a used MD-11 motor back.at one point the switch on the motor stuck on and emptied the film canister.this resulted in a jammed film advance, shutter etc.$125.00 later (repair) shutter modual, sync etc.needlesss to say the motor back went in the junk pile.not many rolls and a year later it jams again (at yoesemite)so now i'm looking at another $125.sadly $250.00 comes real close to buying a new back. i have a 500mm mirrior lens a tele and 50mm nikon lens.out of the three the nikon is the least in Quality.(can hardly take your fingers off the lens with out changing focus.)does nikon have a Quality issue or is it my bad luck?
