Hmm.. ok I see the two screws back and side. The two screws under the rewind crank to remove it and the ASA dial. The two screws to remove shutter speed dial on top of it, but how does the film advance and shutter firer button get removed. Do they come off like a bolt head? Counterclockwise, carefully with a 'soft; pair of pliers? Is there anything under the NIKKORNAT front label plate that has to be unscrewed?
Is there anything else? Springs, washers, connections that have to be addressed as it comes up? I take it that it lifts straight up with the view finder.
Interesting for sure. ;-) Thanks again for any leads. p.

Hi Peter:

Getting into the meter in an EL is going to be quite a bit more difficult than the F prism. The whole top cover has to come off to reach the meter movement.... since the battery check light is working, the problem should be at the top end of the camera - possibly a stuck needle, possibly an electrical problem. Without going in myself, though, I can't give you much of a hint of where to look.

Ok no bites on the El meter not working. Maybe the meter needle is just stuck. Or something came lose. Is this possible? The battery light is bright orange, and the meter needle sits between 30 and 60, on or off, no matter the speed seting. Can someone give me a clue on how to perhaps get into the meter. I had good luck repairing the other of my dad's old cameras, an old Nikon F- Tn meter, but that came off the camera to work on. How do you get at the El meter?
thanks for any help p.

Resurrecting my dad's Nikkormat El. Its has been working for two rolls of film, a little over exposed on the shots, but Ok. But this morning, the meter is not working. Checked the battery and then had a photo store check it on there tester, tested 100%. Battery is about a month old. Any ideas of why the meter is not functioning? Have I inadvertently done something? Shut it off some how? thanks for any help.

I'm putting a Duracell 28L 6V Lithium battery into my Nikomat EL-W. Tell me if this is a bad idea....

Hi Virginia: S76 size silver cells are available all over the place, from Wal Marts to grocery stores wherever they sell small batteries for things like calculators. Besides 76, other compatible numbers to look for are 44, 675, 303 and 357.... I buy 3-packs of #357 Energizers and save a little money from the single battery price (this may not be practical if the Nikkormat is the only thing you have that uses this size battery). Whichever number you find, check to make sure that it's a silver cell and not an alkaline.

Where can I find a 1.5 volt silver battery (KS76) for my 33 year old Nikomat (Japanese version of Nikkormat)? Do they still sell these in camera stores?

Hi John:

"S" on the frame counter stands for "Start" ... it only means that you don't have film loaded in the camera.

You may have a dead battery. The battery in the EL series is hidden under the floor of the mirror box: remove the lens, raise the mirror and push a little tab sideways on the front edge of the floor, and it will swing up revealing the battery.

The EL series are electronic cameras: without a good battery, the camera will not function. If the shutter is cocked, it will not fire and you cannot move the wind lever because it is already wound.

I recently purchased a Nikkormat EL through Ebay at a very low price. The seller failed to disclose the fact that the shutter is stuck and the winder will not move past the thirty degree point. I noticed the frame counter is on 'S' which I presume is shutter.I have ordered an owner's manual. In the meantime, does anyone know a way to resolve this problem?
