Hi David:

I haven't had an EL... from the illustration on the MIR nikkormat pages, though, the eyepiece looks the same as the one in my Nikon F and FM2N and Nikkormat FT, so the same right angle finder should fit. There is often a cover window screwed into the eyepiece to protect it.... if you have this in place, unscrew it and tuck it away in a safe place. The right angle finder should screw into the same thread that held the cover window.

Hi Ron: The camera is a Nikkormat FTn. Click on the "Nikkormat/Nikomat Series" link just above to find instructions for it.

For a battery, here is my suggestion. The original mercury batteries are no longer made; there are several alternatives available but the one at this link is the easiest, cheapest and most accurate... a good combination.

Hi Rod: A silver cell would be best, but there are alkaline and lithium PX28 equivalents that I think will work okay in the EL. The lithium Duracell is marked "28L" with no prefix letters. I think the silver cells are still available, but they may not be in the stores as much as they used to be.... you might try looking for it online, I got quite a few hits when I Googled "PX28"

Rod, I have used the Wein cells in my Nikkormat FTn with reasonable success. The meter needle isn't as smooth as I remember it being with the silver batteries, but it works. I have a Nikomat EL that a friend is currently using to learn photography. As best I remember, it uses a more common lithium cell that is under the prism mirror.

I have a Nikormat EL which I have used for 30 years, currently operating on a Kodak Photolife silver oxide battery 6v #KS28. This battery has been in the camera for past two years and is still full of life but I have started seeking a replacement and find this type of silver oxide battery is now virtually unavailable. I have been offered alkaline and lithium substitutes but they don't seem to work. Does anybody have any suggestions, This a great camera in excellent order and still takes great pictures. I don't want to have to toss it away. Can anybody offer help for a possible replacement battery?

Hi Tom: I assume you already have your light seals. If you don't, if you get a kit from Jon Goodman (jon_goodman@yahoo.com), it will come with good instructions plus his technical support to get you through any questions that may come up. His kits cost about $10. If you already have seals but no instructions, the most important single spot is the hinge seal next to the takeup spool. Replace that, plus the narrow strips across the top and bottom edges of the back door. These are actually set into the grooves in the chassis casting.

Does someone have a diagram of where to place/replace lightseals on a Nikkormat FT-3? Thanks, Tom

Hi Mark:

The Nikkormat FT, FTn and FT2, and the EL and ELW automatics will meter with both Non-AI and AI series lenses, at full aperture. The FTn and FT2 are more convenient to use than the FT.

The Nikkormat FT3 and Nikon EL2 require AI series (or later) lenses to provide normal meter operation and full aperture metering.
