Hi, I have a Nikkormat FTn that I bought in 1970, and it has continued to work flawlessly for over 32 years! I have a 43 to 86mm Nikon zoom, and would like to replace my Vivitar 200mm with a Nikon 70 to 210mm. My problem is there seems to be other later lens versions on the market that are not compatible with the FTn. Is that true. How do I tell if a Nikon lens will work with my FTn? Does the lens have any trade name or markings that make it special or different than those that don't work.Any idesa on where I could find used lenses? I would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks, John

Damaged Nikkormat update - Further to my posting last month about an FT2 on which the lens was jammed following a five-foot drop, I'd like to thank everyone who got in touch with advice or to share similar experiences, and in particular Bob, whose suggestion solved the problem. I removed the nameplate from the pentaprism (two small screws) and, sure enough, the cam/spring mechanism was jamming. I couldn't get it to work properly so I've removed it altogether (two more screws). Although this means that the light meter no longer "knows" what aperture is set, I had already stopped using it because (a) it had started to "jump" due to the classic Nikkormat failing in which the graphite contact wears out, and (b) I prefer to do all my metering with a handheld Sekonic.

Anyway, my FT2 with its dented pentaprism now has an authentic "war-torn" look, and the first roll of film through it shows that focus/viewfinder alignment are still spot on. They really don't make them like this any more. Best wishes, Graham.

We often use the first few letters in front of the serial number (On top of the camera, just beside the Pentaprism see: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikkormat/fseries/ft2/htmls/map.htm) as a guide to distinguish the model of the camera: e.g. FT xxxxxxx means it is a FT, FS xxxxxxxx indicates it is a FS etc. The "NIKKOR 1:3.5 F=55MM no.224472" is the lens type of your lens, it sounds like a Micro-Nikkor lens which is supposedly a very good lens and enable you to take extremely close up shots, the lens carries the serial number 224472.

I have an old SB-5 flash that I would love to be able to use on my FT-2, however, no batteries. Could someone please help me locate the following: SN-2 NiCad battery pack, SH-2 Charger for NiCad pack and SD-4 Heavy use battery pack. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Larry: The Nikkormat EL-2 is one of the manual focus Nikon SLR model that has the BEST compatibility with newer and older series of Nikkor lenses. Yes, your non-AI Nikkor optic can be used freely with your EL2 in stopped down metering mode, while newer AI Nikkor (AF too except the cheap G-series) can be used too.

Hi Reyna !

yes ...you can use the new AF lenses ,the only thing you have to do is to be sure to have a camerarepair shop to install a special metal prong or so called rabbit >ear>onthe top of the lense, exactly placed on the F 5,6 scale on the lens.
This is an easy operation, and cost a little.
Otherwiseyou can use it at is ,but you dont get any metering function on it.
Good Luck! (i use the Nikkormat Ft-3 and mainly use Ai lenses due to this fact, but also Af lenses as well)
