Hi I got my hands on a Nikkormat FT2 for a pretty good price. Seems clean except for this black sticky gummy residue or some kind of grease on the cover hinge, when I open up the camera to stick the film inside. Does anybody know what that is and if it is harmful to the camera at all?3. From : Victor Kunkel (victorkunkel@sbcglobal.net)

Hi Victor!
You're right, that works perfectly and it's inexpensive. Depending on variables like the brand of battery and your climate, the Zinc/Air batteries often last much longer than their reputation suggests.
(I think the number would be 675, though, rather than 625)
I have some stuff on this approach at http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-111.html5. From : Victor (Victorkunkel@sbcglobal.net)

Discovered a battery fix for Nikomat (Nikkormat)FTN. Dad just passed and wanted me to take his almost new black Nikomat. It is a full kit and he rarely used this most wonderful camera. Its condition is 9++ if not 10, but that hardly matters really; I'll not get rid of it for obvious reasons. Of course, the mercury batteries are no longer available. One can get a 1.5V battery that fits, but I wanted to go with the 1.3V that the meter likes. So I thought I'd see what was out there. What I wound up with was a hearing aid battery (size 625, p/n 23-077 zinc air) that was 1.3V but too small in diameter. I sourced it from Radio Shack -- $6.99 for eight batteries. Went to a hardware store and bought some #9 o-rings to fill up the space in the battery chamber. It all fits and the camera is happy. Did the same thing with my beloved black Olympus OM-1. I know the zinc air batteries don't last anywhere as long as the mercury units but their low cost and availability seem to overcome that. Hope this information helps!6. Hi Richard:
The most likely source for a new neckstrap lug will be another Nikkormat body. I think (though I'm not positive) all models will be interchangeable, your odds of finding an FT or FTn will be much better than finding an FT3 to donate a part.
I don't have a disassembled Nikkormat handy, but in most cameras the lugs are retained by a screw on the inside of the body. In some cameras the lug has a threaded stud on it, in which case there is a nut on the inside.. in either case, you remove the top cover to reach it.7. I bought my Nikkormat FT3 new in 1978 and it has gone through thick and thin with me. I was distraught however when the strap attachment eye sheared off from the body. Does anyone know, please, where I can get another eye and what is involved to removed the broken off thread still in the case?8. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Alexandra:
Look for a 55mm f/3.5 Micro-Nikkor lens. It will focus close enough to fill the entire frame with an object 2 inches high by 3 inches wide.
Yes, your light meter could be inaccurate. Check that you have the ASA number set correctly to match your film.... if it is correct and your prints are still gray and hazy, set the ASA to a lower number (try 1/2 of the number of your film ... for instance, 100 if you have ISO 200 film)9. Hi Cassy:
The FT2 can use AF lenses; however, the light meter will not work normally (it can be done but it's a hassle)... and of course you don't get autofocus. Look for any series of manual focus Nikkor lens, either on eBay or at www.KEH.com. The only thing you need to see to know that the lens is fully compatible with the FT2 is the metal "fork" attached to the aperture ring next to the "5.6".10. Hi! I'm an art student and am using my Grandfather's Nikkormat EL (se: 5319835). I'm still learning how to get the best pictures from it and this site has been very helpful.
Is there a lens I could buy to get detailed close-range photos with this camera? what would it be called so I could search ebay?
The lens I'm using now is a Nikkor - S.C Auto 1:1.4 f=50mm can anyone tell me what exactly that means?
Also, my prints seem to be coming out kind of hazy and grey - could me lightmeter be inaccurate? any advice?
Thanks!
Alexandra
