Hi DK: You're correct; I didn't realize there was confusion on that. To recap, here are the battery types:

Nikkormat FT and FTn used the PX625 mercury cell; there are various options as substitutes for this today, but my favorite is the 675 Zinc/Air hearing aid battery.

Nikkormat FT2 and FT3 used silver cells which are still available. The battery size has been given various names over the years, including S76, S44, LR44, 357 and 303, and probably others. The important thing is to look for the word "silver" on the package, as the same size also comes in alkaline and other chemical types.

Generally speaking, alkaline cells should never be used in camera metering systems because they do not maintain a constant voltage. There are a (very) few exceptions to this rule, but none of them are Nikkormats. For those with FT's and FTn's who need to find a substitute for the mercury cell, I have compiled everything I know on the subject at the URL link above. Be sure to follow the links on the page if you want to see all of the options.

Sorry about the typo in the last sentence of my posting. It should read: "The Nikkormat FT2's manual clearly states that it takes a 1.5 volt battery (silver oxide). I mistakenly wrote "zinc oxide." Just wanted to correct that.

I just wanted to clear up the discrepancy over which battery to use for the Nikkormat FT2. After looking at my manual for this camera and speaking with the people at Nikon, this is the correct information: The Nikkormat FT2 was Nikon's first camera to use 1.5 volt silver oxide batteries(as mercury bateries were soon to be phased out), such as the Duracell 76S and the Ultralast 1.5 volt 76S(as opposed to mercury batteries used in other models). My Nikkormat FT2, which I purchased in 1977 has always taken these batteries, as they were intended for this camera. This differs from the FT3 and all other F series cameras which can use the Wein Cell and other zinc-air bateries. Wein Cell batteries(which are too large for the FT2), other zinc-air bateries and any 1.55volt(too powerful) alkaline or zinc oxide batteries (such as those made by Energizer) will not allow the meter to read accurately in the FT2. I know there is a ton of info on this message board that disputes my info, but that other info is incorrect. The Nikkormat FT2's manual clearly states that it takes a 1.5 volt battery (zinc oxide). I really hope this will help all of you Nikkormat FT2 owners who are searching for the correct battery.

Hi The EL's back is opened by pushing back the little lever at the side of the rewind wheel, which allows you to lift the wheel, and fully lifting the wheel, which pops the back open. Good luck. Can anyone tell me whether dead or mis-reading lightmeters in old ELs can actually be repaired these days? Are spares generally available?

I got an old Nikkormat EL for my daughter to start doing B&W photography. She is in another city and can't get the back open. My recollection is that this is done by raising the
knowb. I only have ever used a really really old original series Nikkormat and not the EL. Can anyone help me tell her how to get the back open on a much newer EL? I got her a manual but apparently that can't be located?

Hi Karly: you have the PERFECT camera for a college photography course. Your instructor is the poorer for being unfamiliar with it. You can find the equivalent of an instruction manual right on this site; cut and paste this into your address line:

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikkormat/fseries/ftn/feature1.htm this is the first page of it, there are several more... be sure to follow the links and get it all.

I've recently had a Nikkormat FT N come into my possesion when a family member passed. I've enrolled in a college photography course, but it seems my professor doesn't know much more about my camera than I. I've been online to order an intruction manual. If anyone has any suggestions or helpful hints, all is much appreciated.

Hi Tristan: They were truly diabolical on this one. Remove the lens, raise the mirror and look for a way to lift the floor of the mirror box.... the battery is under there. rick :)=
