hi there, i own a Nikomat FTn serial 3847885... it was my dad's camera, but it is in need of repair.....the light meter does not work any longer both in the viewfinder and on top of the case... my sister brought it to a decent camera store for repair but said they could not get a specific part to fix it.. are there any suggestions to get this beautiful camera repaired? i live in cleveland OH, USA....I do not mind if I have to send this camera to Japan for repair as there is a large sentimental value for this. thanks in advance for your help.. Ernie PS- it has a Nikkor-S Auto 1:1.4 f=50mm 1101992 lens that came with it2. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Dave: I guess you've got an autofocus lens? I'm not sure exactly what Nikon is doing with some of the new stuff: I know that they now use electronic coupling rather than the AI system to transmit data to the meter in the body, resulting in some of the newer bodies being useless with older lenses... it may be that this incompatibility works in reverse as well. Your FTN will work perfectly with any lens that has the meter coupling fork on it, whether non-AI, AI or AIS; if you can live with the metering inconvenience, it will also work with Series E lenses and later 'forkless' AIS lenses. It seems to me that there are at least some AF lenses that will also work with it, as I recall having seen some that had dimples in the aperture ring to facilitate addition of a meter coupling fork for older cameras... but maybe I'm recalling incorrectly there.
Look for a pair of little dimples straddling the 5.6 engraving on your aperture ring: if it has these, then presumably the lens was designed to be compatible with the FTN and could be made to meter normally by installation of a coupling fork at that position. The easy answer though is to look for lenses with the meter coupling fork.3. From : Dave (dcphotography@gmail.com)

Hi, I just got a Nikkormat FTN. I thought it would work fine with any nikkor lens, knowing that the aperture ring wouldn't couple so I can't meter. It seems that when I fire the shutter, the lens stops down to f22 regardless of where I have it set. Is this a camera problem or a issue of what lens to buy? David4. Hi Larry: You can only use a non-AI lens on the FT3 by flipping up the little tab on the camera's AI coupling ring so it does not foul on the back edge of the lens. Having done this, the lens can be mounted but you will have to stop it down to take a meter reading as you have no aperture coupling between the lens and the meter. Most Non-AI lenses can be modified to AI specification; I have several that I use on an FM2n. The service probably costs about $30-50 per lens, and it may be more economical overall to sell the non-AI lens and buy the AI equivalent, depending on what lens you've got. rick :)=5. I just bought a non-AI lens on eBay. I have a NIkkormat FT3 that accepts AI lensed (the lens mount does not have the pin sticking out, as earlier models have). So the question is, can I use a non-AI lens on this camera body? Thanks in advance for your answers7. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Rob: The FT2 is very versatile with lenses, it can accept Non-AI, AI or AIS series from Nikon or third-party brands. Nikons are best of course, and a good deal of money can be saved by buying a Non-AI version. 28mm wide angles and 135mm telephotos tend to be good deals because many were made. Any standard shoe mount flash will work. the Vivitar 283 is almost legendary, a very good flash, but also very bulky and rather heavy; if you don't need a 40 foot reach, you can get something smaller and lighter. I'm not familiar with what's common in England in terms of brands, as I'm in the US... :)=8. From : Rob (jamesro@ealing.gov.uk)

Yes, Manuel, there is (or rather, there WAS) a spring in there. It sounds like somebody opened it up and lost the spring.10. My Nikkormat FTN door latch is faulty. It the chrome tongue slider that I use to open the door or lock it by pushing this tongue upwards does not stay put. It creeps downwards. Is there a spring or other item that I can augment in the mechanish so that the door will not open accidentally when I depress the back door? Something that holds up the up/down latch seems to be at fault. when I unscrewed the area, I found no spring...does it need one? Help. Any suggestions? Thanks.
