I've been using my FT2 without the meter (it's not working at all, no matter what battery I put in it. ) which is not bad as I learned photography using a handheld meter years ago. I have recently aquired an M2 extension tube to use with my Micro Nikkor-P 55/3.5 and have been trying to find out what would be the exposure factors to use with it. Have not been able to find anything on Nikon's website so am turning to you folks for HELP!!If anyone either knows what these would be, or where I could go to find the information I would appreciate it greatly!! Thanks, Michael Hudon

Carl, to start just click the Url link attached to this message. The Nikkormat FT2 is vastly better built and more robust than the great majority of "modern automatics" and will certainly give longer, if not also better service. Your flash unit will probably give you automatic exposure control when you're using it to shoot in low light, and with practice you'll probably be able to handle the Nikkormat as quickly as most people can handle their autofocus machines. Your camera is compatible with all manual focus Nikkor lenses, and autofocus lenses can be adapted for it inexpensively if desired (though you'll have to focus them manually on the Nikkormat). I predict that you will enjoy photography more overall with the Nikkormat than you would with its more modern equivalents. rick :)=

I just got a Nikkormat FT2 in mint comdition with a 50 mm, a 120 mm zoom, a wide angle lens, and flash attachment. Should I trade it in for an automatic, or do you get used to all of the manual adjustments? Where is the best place to learn how to use it?

Victor, the camera was designed to use a 1.4-volt mercury battery (PX-13, #625, or equivalent). Mercury batteries aren't being manufactured anymore for environmental reasons -- at least not in the United States. No other type of cell yields 1.4 volts. What you are going to have to do is first decide what other type of battery fits and is most readily available to you, and then bring the camera to a competent repairman to have the meter re-calibrated to work correctly with that battery. Here is the good news: the camera's former owner might have already done that. Go to a camera store and explain your situation. Ask to try different types of batteries in your Nikomat and compare their readings to that of a good-quality external light meter. Good luck. I've had *my* Nikomat FTn since 1968, and it's still going strong!

i have put a 6v alkaline in my nikkormat el and the meter appears to be over reading light by as much as 3 stops is the fault of the battery type? is it worth buying a 6v silver oxide instead? thanks nick
