I'm in the same boat as D. Craig. My Nikkormat fs definitely needs a tune up. Does anyone know a reliable place where I can send it? Thanks, Na Oxford, AR

Need to get a "Tuneup" on my recently purchased Nikkormat ftn. Local camera shop has had it since Aug with no results. I am in the eastern edge of the S. Cal area (next step east is the Desert) - willing to mail it but want an expirenced reputable repair shop. Any ideas? Thanks My original one was stolen in 96 - maybe we have a descerning thief running around???

Hi Tom: I really don't know - I've never repaired an EL and I'm not very familiar with them. You're right about the Mamiya/Ricoh/Nikon connection with the Nikkorex F. It was not up to Nikon standards and I think it taught Nikon a lesson about preserving brand value - the results of which showed strikingly when they introduced the excellent Nikkormat line to replace the Nikkorex. Sears private labeled Ricoh SLRs for a long time, and frankly I think they got quite a bit better after that original Singlex.... although it has the wonderful distinction of being the only Ricoh with a Nikon lens mount..... As far as Cosina goes, I think their connection with Nikon is limited to the FE-10 and FM-10 - which I don't think were very good even by Cosina standards, much less Nikon.

Rick, I have an old EL that still works in auto but the needle doesn't move in manual, is this fixable? should I or just use my FM for manual use and keep the EL for the quick auto snap shots?

On the recent post of Nikkormats being made by Cosina. I've heard this, but found that they were actually refering to the old Nikorex, which was made by Mamiya and sold to Nikon and to Ricoh as the Singlex (the only Ricoh with Nikon F mount). It was also sold to Sears, but I don't remember their model name.

HI Jhunt: I don't have an EL, but I believe you will find a ring below the rewind knob which, if you turn the ring slightly, will release a latch and allow you to pull the knob upwards. Pulling up firmly on the knob will open the back.

Hi Brad: In 1974, the current model Nikkormat was the FTn (or, if it was autoexposure, the Nikkormat EL). The same camera (and other Nikkormat models) was made both under the Nikomat and the Nikkormat names: it was called Nikomat in Japan and Nikkormat in the USA.... so, while the Nikkormat name is more common you should be able to find a Nikomat. To determine which of these two models you had, look at the pages linked here:

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikkormat/index.htm

The most obvious differences between the FTn and the EL were:
(1) The FTn was manual exposure with a meter needle in the viewfinder; the EL was autoexposure, the camera would set the shutter speed automatically.

(2) The battery for the EL was loaded through the lens mount, under the mirror - a bit weird. The FTn used a conventional battery cap on the baseplate.

(3) The FTn had its shutter speed dial as a ring around the lens mount, with a protruding tab to grip it with. On the EL, the shutter speed dial is a more conventional knob on top next to the shutter release button. Once you determine which one you had, I would search eBay for "Nikomat" (it only has one K in this version), and keep watching until you find the right one. Online stores like KEH and Cameta Camera are good too, but in any case you'll probably have to be patient to find the right combination.

I would like to replace a Nikkomat camera given to me by my parents as my first proper camera probably around 1974/75 that was stolen in the late 80's (still pissed off!) Black body, definitely Nikkomat, not Nikkormat. Could anyone help me identify model name and number, etc?? Or point me in the right direction? Cheers, Brad

Hi Eddy: I don't quite understand your question. What model of Nikkormat are you dealing with? The meter coupling works differently on different models. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "release the coupler".
