The Nikkormat FTN will work with any flash from any manufacturer, as long as the flash comes with a PC cord to connect it to the camera. The FTN does not have a shoe to put the flash in, so you will need either the accessory shoe or a bracket to hold it. Connect the PC cord to the socket marked "X" on the end of the camera body, and select a shutter speed of 1/125 second or slower. For exposure control, most flash units have a dial or table where you set your ISO film speed and it tells you what aperture to set on your lens and what your maximum possible shooting distance will be. Within this limit, the flash will control its output automatically for correct exposure.

What flash units can be used for a Nikkormat FTN? I have the Nikon units, but what about the Vivitar and other generic brands?

Hello. My son has inherited a Nikkormat EL, with a stuck metering needle. The pictures seem to indicate that no metering is taking place. I do not know the EL, so I read your article, which says the battery is tucked under the mirror(!) --- my first Nikon is an N2000. So the question is: how do I get at it? Does one just use the mirror lock-up button (indicated in the picture)? Also, what would be an equivalent 6-volt battery today? My son lives abroad and I would like to have one the next time I visit. Thank you for your trouble. The write-up was very helpful.

I recently bought an AW-1 winder for my EL-2. The winder was advertised as "tests OK" but sold AS IS. I can't get it to work - power light won't come on. Cosmetically, it is in good shape - doesn't appear to have been abused but I really don't know anything about its history. Any trouble shooting tips or repair manuals out there? I'd appreciate any help or advice. Thanks Dennis

Thought I would add a post script to my previous posting. It turns out the AR-2 shutter release cable is indeed the correct cable for the Nikkormat ELW. In case anyone else should have the same question in the future.

I have an old Auto Winder (AW-1) for my EL2 that needs a 15-tooth nylon drive gear. Any suggestions? Doug.
