I love my old Nikkormat (before the hotshoe) my favorite of all times, I now have a nikon slr D 50 but its not the same experience as all manual. If i could afford the film and developing i'd use my old one for my artys stuff.

What i found the most fun was all manual double exposures in black and white. Shoot and storyboard the roll of film (halfthe light setting) the roll it back just until it gets loose before it goes into the magazine , open the back and set the film bavck on the sprokets. Then take your storyboard along and shoot over the roll again.Magic!

Thanks so much for your wevb site.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has tried to use a speedlight 80dx on their Nikkormat FTN? Does it work?

Thanks!
LPK.

My Nikkormat Ftn totally manual with no hotshoe was my first 35 mm camera and still remains an all time favorite, I have a newer nikond d60 but i want to use my old nikkortmat again for black and white double exposures, if I can get over the shock of paying for film and developing again.

Hello Lorenzo:

Your camera is a Nikkormat FTN. You can use any series of manual focus Nikkors - Non-AI, AI or AIS - as long as the lens has the metal coupling fork attached to the side of the aperture ring next to the 5.6 marking. The best prices will be on the Non-AI lenses, since they can't be used on many later model cameras without being modified.

Autofocus lenses, Nikon Series E, and some later AIS series lenses do not have the coupling fork ... these are the only Nikon-made lenses that you want to avoid.

I bought my Nikkormat new in 1973, with FT in front of the serial number, and N above the external light meter. I have never had a lens other than the standard 50mm. Now, renewing my interest in photography, I want another lens. I have looked at those offered on KEH.com and there are many available.

Can knowlegeable users here recommend a lens? I'm interested in either a fixed focal length, such as 135mm (or...105mm, 85mm...), or perhaps a zoom, though I'm a bit reluctant to use a zoom due to edge resolution and light limitations... I also understand that I need to be careful with regard to AI, AIS, and non-AI designations and how they will or will not work on this Nikkormat. I also hear that Series E must not be used.

Thank you!
Lorenzo

Hi Leslie:

The FT2 is my favorite of all of the Nikkormats.

There aren't any digital cameras that I would think of as a very close equivalent to the FT2; however, there are some that are very decent cameras and might be able to serve its function for you.

One that I would look at is the new Nikon D-3000. This is a very capable, reasonably priced camera that you are unlikely to outgrow. As far as compatibility with your Nikkormat lenses, I believe that you will be able to mount and use them on the D-3000, but that you will get no light meter function and, of course, the automatic exposure modes will not operate - but I am not an expert on Nikon's current products, so you would want to verify these points with the dealer if you want to use your old lenses on it. It is also possible to use older Nikon lenses with an adapter on a Canon, such as the Rebel XS, which is similar in capability to the D-3000. With the Canon, the meter and aperture-priority auto mode would continue to work with the Nikon lens.

In either case, however, I am sure that you will quickly find you prefer using the new lens that comes with the DSLR rather than using your manual-focus Nikkors (I use a lot of older lenses myself, but I'm a little bit nuts)

I used an FT2 for years until it needed repair and the parts just couldn't be found. I've had several cameras since then but the best pics I've ever taken came from the FT2 camera. I almost always shot on manual and loved being able to control things that way.
Could someone please tell me what would be the closest digital equivalent to this camera?
Thanks so much
Leslie

Looking for help in the disassembly of my Nikkormat FT2. I have two questions. How do you remove the black round cap from the top of the pivot point of the film winding lever, or how to remove the film winding lever. Second are there any tips on removeing the small screws as they seem very tight and prone to stipping. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Joe
