hi,
i have a nikkormat ftn, no manual. I searched for one on the net and all i found was people offering them for 10 or 20 dollars. and i can't seem to understand metering at all, and the damn needle in the viewfinder is always above the minus diode, it moves a little when you shake the camera but returns to the same position again. i have tried pointing the camera at different objects and changed the shutter speed, aperture stops and still nothing happens. help.

hi beth:

whether it's repairable, of course, depends on what's wrong with it. It could be a corroded wire from the battery box, which is a fairly likely cause and would probably be the simplest to repair but not necessarily as easy as it sounds because of the way the wiring is threaded through the camera; other possibilities are a bad switch, a worn out resistor at the lens mount (this probably WOULD be unrepairable) or bad light cells. most professional repair services don't want to handle older cameras any more because it's hard to make money that way and they have families to feed; but there are still some folks out there who will do it.

here is an index of repair services that you might call and see what they say. i've never dealt with any of them personally, so this isn't an endorsement:

one other thing: you can't get the PX625 mercury battery for the FT any more. so when you get it fixed, you'll have to choose either a zinc/air cell with a fairly short life or a silver cell with the wrong voltage, neither of which is the same size as the original battery. the easiest solution will probably be a CRIS adapter, which sells for $20-30 and adapts the silver cell to fit while also reducing its voltage. your repair person can help you find one of those.

Was given a beautiful FT with 50mm lens but the light meter does not work and I was told by Southern Photo Tech Service that is not repairable by anyone - any thoughts? I really want to get the meter fixed.
Thanks

I just discovered your fantastic website and hope you will post this. On 2-22-05 I inadverdently left our NIKKORMAT FTn in a taxi in Washington, DC. It has an ID#(R22----)etched on the body, and was in a brown leather case.

We'd bought the camera new in 1970 and absolutely loved it. As one of our daughters said, "It's like losing a member of the family.

I look forward to perusing more of your website. Thank you.

Hi. I am refurbishing a Nikkormat EL. Have replaced the mirror bumper foam , but when I checked the seals around the back I could find no trace of any old foam there. The channel is very narrow - not much more than 1mm wide, leading me to suspect that this model did not rely on foam light seals..
Could someone with an EL check their camera and tell me what they find? Thanks in advance - Ian.

Anyone have an instruction manual for a Nikkormat FT3 or is willing to swap for a Nikkormat EL manual?

To those who may be interested: The new Nikon F5 site is opened for preview now:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/NikonF5/index.htm
The section has included some newer AF Micro-Nikkor optics at the MACRO segment (lacks good macro photos to bright up the pages, but I am talking to some for contributions). A dedicated Message Board is also provided. Enjoy.
