I am trying out some new things, for a long time I have had a Nikkormat FT and FT2, they work perfectly, I recently purchaced the Nikkor -p 55mm 3.5 and have two M2 toobs as well as two non Nikon 2x teliconverters. I have connected all of these items together and it works. (Got some photos back today) But, I several frames did not 'turn out' I need a better understanding of what I should be doing to meter this , and how to guess what the best settings for the camera should be, I think I was using 1/60 and f32, then 16, then 11. To test where I was. Does the stop down method work with the M2 toobs and two 2 x teles?
The sequence I have them in is Lens/M2 Toob/M2 toob, 2x tele/2x teleCAMERA I have noticed there is a diffrence in magnification if I do it this way insted of lens2x2xM2M2CAMERA So how do I meter it? so I get a close estimation of the correct exposure? Thanks..2. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Will: One way you can get a correct meter reading with a 'forkless' lens is to turn the coupling ring on the body so that the little pin aligns with 5.6 on your lens (this is where the fork would be, if it were present). For stop-down metering, the ring needs to be parked with the pin over toward the upper right (as you look at the front of the camera).... I believe there should be a sort of detent in that area to keep it in the correct position. rick :)=3. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Sandy: The FTn gives correct light readings when the DOF button is NOT pushed in. when you push the button in, the amount of light reaching the meter is less and the needle drops; just ignore that and meter with the lens open. rick :)=4. From : sandy (sandy_free_@hotmail.com)

hey guys, my uncle recently gave me his Nikkormat FTn. its such a solid and well built camera, which im sure will give me many years of photographic pleasure. one question about the camera. the depth of field preview button. when you are using the light meter do you need to push in the DOF button to get an accurate reading for a proper exposure? because if you dont push it in, it still gives a light reading. any help would be much appreciated...5. Hey guys, I'm very new to photography but my girlfriend is going to Brooks institute so I thought I'd piggy back on her education. Here's the deal. She has an old FTN that works great. I've been using it with a handheld light meter because I'm using newer Nikon and Vivitar lenses that don't have that slot that syncs with the prong on the camera. My question is this: Is there a way to get a correct meter reading when using these lenses? Because right now its totally off. I've read somewhere that I need to use 'stop-down' metering. Any help would be much appreciated.6. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hello Roberto:
The correct replacement battery for the Nikkormat FT is a #625 mercury battery. In many places these are no longer obtainable due to their poisonous mercury content, and they have been largely replaced by the A625 alkaline cell. Unfortunately, the voltage of the alkaline cell is neither correct nor stable, and it gives variable (though sometimes usable) accuracy in the Nikkormat light meter.
I use a #675 Zinc-Air hearing aid battery instead, which gives good accuracy and lasts about 6 months. I buy the batteries in 6-packs at a local pharmacy and the cost is about $1 per battery or less (the batteries can be stored for an indefinite time before use). The battery is a bit smaller than the 625, so I made a simple spacer to make it fit. The URL attached to this message shows the details of my method and also has links to your other options.

Hello Michael:
At 27.5mm of extension (1:2, the limit without the tube), you should open up 1 stop (actually a hair more, but this is close enough); at 55mm (1:1, requiring an extension tube), open up 2 stops (exactly).
A bit of experimentation is probably a good idea though.

I love my Nikkormat ELW. I bought it 27 years ago and haven't had the desire to retire it. It got dropped a couple of years ago and the meter hasn't worked since. I'd like to have it repaired. Has anyone out there had similar repair work done? Was it worth it? Or should i just go to a hand-held meter?
