I picked up a Nikkormat FT at a gargae sale. I can't figure out how to set the ASA speed so that it's "locked" and the ring doesn't keep turning. Thanks!

My Nikkormat EL has developed a shutter problem after 20 years hard work. The shutter speed has become stuck at about 1/15, but if I put it on auto it seems to work fine. Is it easy to repair as I don't have a repairs manual.

Roy,are those pictures with 1/3 black taken with a flash? If so,you probably used too high a shutter speed. Are the pictures without flash OK?

I bought an older Nikkormat FTn for Christmas and I've had difficulty taking photos. I inconsistently get prints that have nearly the bottom 1/3 of the print with a totally black area. The photos's are unusable. I don't always get this malfunction---I get it about 1/2 of a roll. It seems to occur regardless of whether I shoot in a horizontal plane or in the vertical plane.

Any ideas? I checked the operation of the shutter with the back door open and it looks like it's working OK---I don't see any hanging when the shutter is snapped. The lighting on the satisfactory part of the photo is excellent. Any ideas? If I don't get successful roll shot, I'll be forced to return the camera to the dealer I bought it from. Thanks. My EL shutter hangs up when the focus is greater the 20' on the f24 and f50 lens but not on the f105 lens. When I am set for focus longer then 20' and I turn the focus ring to a shorter distense then the shutter works. Any ideas?

"Stop down" is referring to use an aperture value (e.g. f/5.6, f/11 etc. on lens section) while you shoot pictures. Most Nikon SLR cameras offer full aperture metering, meaning they will only "stop down" the aperture you have selected durng moment of expousre. At other times, it will remain "open fully" at the maximum aperture (f/1.4, f/2.8 etc.) of the lens in order to let the photographer enjoys bright viewfinder image for picture focusing/composing. EL has no Ai meter coupling system yet(the Nikon's full aperture metering system introduced after 1977). The E series lenses were the first among the Ai family to drop the meter coupling prong on top of the aperture ring to allow non-Ai Nikon camera to mate with the old semi-automatic full aperture metering system employed inside those non-Ai bodies. Overall, it is not a good idea to use E series lenses with your EL but such combination is not entirely impossible as only metering accuracy will be affected. Stopping down to the picture taking aperture other than the maximum aperture of your lens will usually "dim" the viewfinder. In this case (as focusing distance may also affect meter reading), focus first with your lense wide open, then only stop down the lens to the selected aperture while using the meter needle as indicative guide for a rough exposure. Well, some users may tell you that by mounting an Ai-s E series lense may damage your camera, I do have some reservation over such negative remarks but I do agree you have other better options than buying an E lens for your EL. The best bet is any Ai-S spec MF Nikkor lenses as it will work both Ai and Non-Ai Nikon bodies. p.s. Technically, ALL Nikon E series lenses and AF Nikkor can be grouped under Ai-S lenses and they DO NOT provide a meter coupling prong.

How do you mount a "E" series lens to Nikkormat EL? They say that the "E" will work ,but you must stop down. What does that mean? Thanks Larry

To Tanya; go to :http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikkormat/elseries/index.htm

Mark, the same thing happened to my Nikkormat.I just took a piece of clear plexiglass, cut it down to the right size, and glued it on.Does the job and keeps the insides clean. Incidentally,I'm surprised at the amount of requests for instructions, manuals etc when you are already in the MIR site. How did you get here?
