I own a Nikomat FT2 which I purchased new in 1975. Great camera. Love it. However, after 26 years of reliable performance, I recently have been having some problems with it. Would there be anyone out in cyberspace who can suggest ways to deal with the following issues...

1. The major problem is with the shutter. I took it in to the Nikon Canada service centre (in Toronto, Ontario) and they confirmed that shutter speeds are off (they didn't say how much). There is no obvious physical damage to the shutter but they tell me that it is not adjustable and that I need a new shutter. However, they also tell me that parts are no longer available for this camera and there is nothing they can do to repair it. Does anyone have any suggestions how I may obtain a replacement part? Any suggestions as to where I might get this repaired in Canada?

2. The foam (?) light-tight seal around the back opening cover has deteriorated due to age. It became "gummy" and disintegrated. I removed it as best I could and cleaned the area around the cover with rubbing alcohol to prevent the bits of the seal from getting into the interior mechanism of the camera. I'm hoping I can still use the camera without it. Or, find some way to replace it. Any suggestions?

3. The original hard case has pretty well deteriorated too and I need a new one. Again, Nikon no longer stocks these. Any suggestions here?

I really want to keep using this camera. New ones are expensive! And, I have two excellent lenses for the Nikomat which I also want to keep using (and which I understand are not useable with the new Nikon camera backs).

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I have recently had problems with the meter indexing mechanism on my FT2 in the camera body. After correctly fitting the lens, the max. aperature mechanism "slips", and the only way I can meter correctly, is use the stop-down method. Anyone repaired this problem? As a mechanical technician, I am happy to attempt it my self.

I have a non-AI zoom Nikkor-C 80-200mm with a fixed 4.5 aperture. It is with fungus and needs a pretty good and expensive cleaning. I would like to know if this is a VERY good lens that one must keep at any cost, or if it not worth to get it serviced. Thank you, in advance...

Hi all,
I grabbed a black Nikomat FT2 (supposed to be rare??) two weeks ago at a local camera shop for a mere 80 dollars. It works perfectly apart from the following issues:
1. the meter doesnt turn off when i push the rewing level towards the camera body
2. the hot shoe doesnt trigger the flash. the pc connector does.

does anyone have an idea about what can be wrong and how i could solve the problems? does the meter consume power if I cap the lens or lock the mirror up?
also the focusing screen is not the usual centre split image type, but another one, much better and brighter, similar to the standard one of the Olumpus OM1. is it a rare feature or did somebody change the screen ( I thought these cameras accepted no interchangeable screens)
thanks for any help!
Nikos from Luxembourg

Nikkormat FT is a NON-AI camera. AF Nikkor is AI-S lens in nature, but they DO NOT have a meter coupling shoe to mate with the Nikkormat FT's metering coupling to activate the meter. Basically, you CANNOT meter with these AF Nikkor lenses. Look for any AL lenses (Those with a rabbit shoe on top of the aperture ring) and use them with the FT - you will find your meter in your camera will come back "alive" again.

I have a Nikomat FT and a previous owner has etched his name on the base and the front of the pentaprism just above the word "Nikomat". I have a feeling this was considered the done thing in the mid 60's as I have come across quite a few similarly disfigured old workhorses.
The base plate I can live with (it's not really visible) but I'd really like to replace the little nameplate that screws to the front of the pentaprism and Nikomat ones are not that common here.
Any ideas where I might find a Nikomat nameplate?
Many thanks
Jon

Bob Hazard, I assume your "F3" is referring to a Nikkormat FT3. Anyway, both F3 and FT3 will accept both AI and NON-AI lenses and only workble in Stopped Down metering if you attempt to use NON-AI lenses with them (Simple, press the DOF lever and meter, then shoot but DON'T use this way when you are using AI lenses). Basic difference between FT-3 and Nikon F is FT3 is a AI-spec camera (just mount any AI lens on, meter and shot); couple, mounting a lens onto a non-AI Nikon F is more complicated, refer to the respective user's manual in this site for more.
