Rick: thanks - you have pretty well reinforced what I was thinking with the additional 30 year electronics comment. Hadn't considered that. I really liked the feel of the ftn - I got it second hand in 72 or 73. Was very disappointed with the replacement FM10(?) I was given by the insurance company. feels like a toy and I have rarely used it plus none of my lenses will fit. I will ebay for a while for the FT2 will go for the black body this time - wife figures the camera will be a cheaper way of reliving my mis-spent youth than replacing the 64 Austin Healy 3000 mk III (skyblue metallic w/white top).
On a sideways question: Any one have expirence with DVD slideshow software? Am digitizing the app gadzillion slides I took those many years ago and want to spread the results around while my relatives are capable of viewing them. I have good info on the digitizing and storage process for any one interested - either here or via email. Have done 4200 so far - but have not been happy with what I am learning about the software.2. I'm the original owner of a Nikkormat EL from 1972. Unfortunately, while the exposure meter registers, it reads a bright exposure all right, but re-aiming the camera from bright to very dim subject results in speed drop of only about 1/2, i.e., from about 1/125 to between that speed and 1/60th. Very dark subject out of light should cause speed to drop to around 1/15th or slower. The meter does respond to manually changes in shutter speed and lens aperture. Any idea why exposure is stuck in such a narrow range? Simple fix?3. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

The EL will accept your lenses, and it's a good camera. My personal pick, though, would be the FT2. The EL's electronics are going on 30 years old now, and that's a long time for 1970s era electronics (though you certainly can get good service out of the better electronic cameras of that era, like the EL, the Canon EF and the Olympus OM2). The FT2 is a slight update of the FT, using the same lenses but with a 1.5 volt silver oxide battery that you can still get. No automation, but its mechanical shutter is almost guaranteed to outlive you.....
It's taste and priorities, though: both will work with your lenses and both are excellent cameras. (Avoid the EL2 and FT3; these had the revised AI mount and you'll be in for a lot of lens modification or replacement if you get one of those) :)=4. From : dale (dalecraig@msn.com)

am getting re-bit by the shutter bug - My well-used nikkormate (I took probably 10,000 slides" was stolen 7 or 8 years ago - probably a FTN. Am looking at either the FT2 or EL. I still have the lenses - including the Vivitar Series 1 70-210 and a couple of others. Will the EL accept them? Does the EL have the "feel" of the FTs? Any suggestions/recommendations?5. HI! Thanks for the info on the FT2 lenses. Unfortunately, the pictures of lenses on ebay leave much to be desired. Lots of them just show one view and that usually doesn't show the back with the fork. But at least I know what to not buy and what type of lense to look for. Thanks for your response! Jim6. Hi Jim: The FT2 can use almost any Nikon mount lenses, but you were lucky enough to hit an exception. Non-AI, AI and AIS series lenses will all work; some of the later AIS ones lack the coupling fork. Nikon Series E and autofocus lenses do not have the fork, so avoid them. Basically, when looking on eBay, just look for the coupling fork in the pictures - that's all you need to know. The fork can be added to most later Nikon lenses, if you find one you really really want. As for the curving lines toward the edges: you will probably discover that zoom lenses tend to be worse about this than fixed-focal-length wide angles, so if this is critical you might want to consider a 35mm to go with your 28 instead of the zoom. :)=7. I have a Nikormant FT2 and want to get a 28-70 zoom (or similar) but not sure which style lense will work with it. I already bought one on ebay and had to send it back because it didn't have the coupling yoke. I see lots of series this and series that but don't know what will work with the camera completely functional. So, please, if you would, send me a list of numbers and letters and series letters (it's a confusing world for the layman!) that will work on the FT2 so I can start looking on Ebay for the lense. I need it for my business. I build furniture and would like to take pictures of the work on site and my 28mm is a bit too wide with curved outside lines showing on the pictues. The zoom will let me format the picture without having to climb over the couch or coffee table to get it all in! Any help you can give will be much appreciated! hi greg: try placing the camera on its back, lens off, and applying ONE DROP of cigarette lighter fluid to the lens locking pin next to the release button. if it's just dirty, this should make it pop out and start working. exercise it several times while it's still wet to work the dirt out of it and you should be okay. if this has no effect, you may have a broken spring or some other damage. i think the EL has a regulated circuit, so the alkaline batteries should be okay. you'll get better service out of silver cells though.10. Hi. I have a Nikkormat EL of my dads that i just recently dragged out of the closet and dusted off. ive shot a few rolls thru it and found it is a great camera...one problem though is the bayonet lens release button is jammed in, i was wondering if there is an easy and inobtrusive fix for this. its not a big deal but it does get irritating when you are adjusting your aperture and the entire lens begins to turn! any help is appreciated! thanx
PS also is it ok to use an alkaline battery for the light meter (lr44) or will this affect my metering accuracy?
