Collection of my Thai Religious Amulets/Pendants - Message Board/Guestbook

Religious Thai Amulets are immensely popular among many Thai locals or even the Chinese that residing in South East Asia - probably most followers never have the chance to worship the religion and hopefully with the little image that we wear on the body can provide some form of relief. As I mentioned in the site, probably it takes a Thai to create such a high quality website features specifically on these lovely collective pendants. As I can never be claimed knowledgeable in this strong thai traditions but since I am a web developer in nature, I create this solely for personal consumption and hope to provide a linkage among all passionate collectors. Some of the opinion presented within the site was entirely personal and I do not wish to influence any decision prior to any potential purchases or disposal. So, this forum is intended to provide a channel for all to make use of it to present your own individual views. Enjoy.

Hi Lee and all,

The address that you ahve given is not a temple in Phuket but rather Chonburi (in thai 'l' is pronounced as 'n' for eg it is King Bhumibon articulated and not King Bumibol). Where as the Buddha pendant from the pedlar claiming to be from Wat Pak Nam is based in Thonburi side of Bangkok. This is not to say that the pedlar might not been collecting on behalf of Wat Pak Nam, rather, it is quite unusual to be collecting amount for monk's robes. Usually, when the temple has a special projects eg building a school, monks' university or hospital next to the Wat, the Wat committee would organise a more bona fide "collective merit making" donation form - almost always in a white envelope. You may then write the name of the persons you wish to ascribe the merit accrued in this meritorous act to. There is no minimum amount and all are welcome to participate in this collective merit making. Lord Buddha's teaching is universally democratic for all including those less fortunate.

I would think that the process you had describe falls into the realm of the money making donation collecting type. Notwithstanding this, I agree fully with the Co-Moderator to ask your friend to treat the pendant with respect by returning the pendant to a temple. This is more meritorous then merely throwing it away. Sadhu.

Dear everyone, I'm from singapore and its a remarkable website i must say.

I have a query on behalf of my friend. recently at a pasar malam (night market), he was given a thai buddha amulet by one of the stall which is demonstrating some palm reading stuffs. the speaker said as a respect to a saviour abbot/monk from Wat Prat Nam from bangkok, he will distribute amulets blessed by him. of course as expected, nothing is free, he asked if those who have gotten the amulet want to have it encased in a steel casing for S$20. its optional though.

So my friend did, and was told to provide name and dob so as to pray/bless for him. and he was asked to make some donation to the monk for robe(monk clothing) purchase starting from $98. my friend who is in $$difficulty could only provide a small amount which they accept without comlains, just say that if next time better, can donate too. of course many would say this is con job. but to be fair, they need to pay rental for the stall space too. right?

he was given a name card:
Wat Kratinglai
59, Moo 6, Tumbol Nongplalai Amphor,
Banglamung Cholburi,
20150 Thailand

I did a search on the net and it seems to be located at phuket. but instead of no. 59, according to the yellow page the mentioned wat should be at no. 295. No. 59 belongs to another Wat. So does this confirm its a con job?

Anyway, my friend question is are such amulet genuine? if not, can he just throw it away?

Remarks from C0-Moderator: Do be careful when it comes to donating to a "temple" that is located overseas. Supporting the sangha is indeed a noble cause, but of course we don't want to end up supporting a "household" in Chonburi instead of a temple, right? Another humble suggestion I could make is instead of supporting an overseas Thai wat, why not support a local Thai wat in Singapore instead ? does not have to be Thai, but could be Sri Lankan or Burmese as long as there are 1 or more bhikkhus residing there it is perfectly fine. Support does not have to be monetary as you can support the sangha in many ways eg. bringing cooked food before noon, offering the requisites eg. soaps, razor blades, medicines etc. I am sure they would be very happy to have locals supporting them with right view.

Regarding amulets from pasar malam, as a collector I don't think much can be said about the piece your friend got especially if it's a Wat Paknam piece. All amulets, real or fake should be treated with respect since they bear the image of our teacher - the Buddha. So don't advice your friend to anyhow just throw into the rubbish bin. If he doesn't want it, he might want to give it to someone that is not too fussy but wants something to wear , if not just give to temple.
