Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

" ...... I currently own a '77 FM which is a great camera but I am tempted to trade it for an FE because of the Auto exposure setting which I feel could give me more spontaneous results... I love the...."

Jeremy,
Wow these are tough questions to answer but here goes. The FE vs. FM is like comparing two vehicles that are the same but different in as much as one has an automatic transmission and the other has a manual transmission. I own an FE2 and FM2n and find the build quality of both excellent. The FE series can be used as a manual or automatic exposure camera which I find very attractive. I guess it is all about choices and what you prefer. You can not go wrong with one or the other. If you are looking for a little more speed then the FE series is a little quicker to use in those moments of trying to capture images that are constantly changing.

Nikon now has a new camera that has been released that is called the FM3A that seems to be an updated version of the FE2 in some respects. It might be worth looking at considering the FE series has been out of production for sometime now. Just a little food for thought. I hope this helps.

You might want to take a look at the FE site and compare the two cameras for more detailed information.

I currently own a '77 FM which is a great camera but I am tempted to trade it for an FE because of the Auto exposure setting which I feel could give me more spontaneous results... I love the fully manual FM and would love some advice about whether the FE rates as highly... is the build as good, are there any disadvantages to the FE ( apart from the fact that you are restricted to one shutter speed if your battery goes half way up Mt. Everest... but luckily I've never had that problem ) - Has anyone owned both ? or has anyone got any suggestions or advice that would be of use to me ?

Niels: That is not true. I don't see any reason why would an older FM should cost more than the newer FM model that followed. I would rather termed it as a fix to the flaw over the design rather than twist and turn by the shop assistant to rate it as a collector piece. So as long as you are buying a camera for your own use - you don't have to pay a premium over it. It just don't worth the extra.

Hi i have an FM, equipped with a 50mm 1.8nikkor lense and am lookinh to buy a new lense largely for travel photgraphy. I am looknig at either buying a nikkon 80-200 MF and a set 28mm. or going for convenience with a tamron 28 - 200. Will i have any problems with the AF tamron? I am worried that it does not have a one touch cuff and will therefore be difficult to focus quickly. Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

Does an older Nikon FM with locking ring around the shuuter release button has a better value than a FM ? I was quoted slighly higher because the shop assistant said theat has a higher collector value. Is that true ?

Vinny, Thank you so much for your helpful advice. Probably I will buy a lens with 50mm/1.4 or 50/1.8.

David Shan

It depends on your needs. I have a 28mm and its great with scenic and architecural shots. But I intend to get a 50mm f1.8 becoz I'm not quite happy with my 35-70mm zoom. Most of my pictures with the zoom are set at around 50mm anyway, so I think the extra aperture will be great. I was told that it's very sharp, enlargement from it looks great too.

The 50mm f1.8 is about less than half the price of the 28mm f2.8
28mm gives you dramatic pictures, but I feel like a 50mm is more practical. And if you save up a bit, a 24mm is not that much of a difference compared to a 28mm... think about it..

I just bought a new FM2(White) the other day for USD400. Now I am seeking a suitable lens for my new gear. Till now, I still can't make up my mind what kind of AIS lens I should choose, 50MM/1.8 or 28/2.8 or something else. Is there anyone who can do me a favor to give me some advice upon that? Thanks in advance.

I thought the new FM-3a was going to replace the FM-2n, so is Nikon still manufacturing Fm-2 (cuz it is still on the official website) ? Or are they keeping it as a cheaper alternative of mechanical cameras?

I recently aquired a nikon fm2 and I do not have a manual. Since I have not used a manual camera in a very long time I am not sure if the FM2 is supposed to have a light meter in the body of the camera (like my old pentax) or do I need to use an external light meter when using this model? Thanks for any comment--I would like to get my creative juices going again.
