Modern Classic SLRs Series : |
The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. I have tried to mount a fm3a film back onto a used nikon fe2, it snapped in place but I didn't shoot any pictures with it because it was in the camera shop and the shop owner was polite enough to let me give it a try, as he was equally interested to find out whether it can.2. Please help. I can't decide between a manual focus Nikon like the FM3A or a autofocus Nikon. I do street and candid photography. I have to be very fast. It seems that by the time I focus and set all the dials of the manual focus that the subject would be in bed sleeping! What do you think? Auto or manual?3. Ding - an alternative material for mirrordampening seen on the NikonRepair list is film cartridge velvet. For the light seal I have heard of some kind of thread beeing used - however, I would think there would be some risk of getting fibres into the film chamber and possible obstructing expossure - fibre shadows showing up on pictures.5. Alvin Isaacs: It is very unusual for a new FM2n camera that fails to function its metering display. The exposure meter checks the lighting situations against correlation of film speed, shutter speed and aperture in use. Exposure readout is via the triple LED displa in the FM and FM2n in five diffrent gradations. SPDs changes the light energy into current flow and is then converted through the MOS logarithmic time compression circuit into voltage. The film speed, shutter speed and aperture in use are convetered by means of FRE into resistance value(s). BOTH of these are combined in the process circuit to output the voltage and display the readings sorted to 5 different gradations seen inside the finder. Now, if LEDs fails to display or glow, not necessary it is a disastrous thing to happen to your camera, because FM2n will still be able to function normally except, of cause minus the metering. But the most likely cause for such thing to happen is related to power supply circuit (poor soldering, loosely screwed joints etc.) In some rare cases, the leadwire or the condenser short circuit could also contribute to this. I have been told by my a technician friend of mine that in some cases, even the battery chamber earth contact fails to earth could also causes the LED display to malfunction. Anyway, this is NOT a serious issue and any good technician should able to fix this without excessive cost incurred. Further, some of these answers are actually provided by leo and I don't intend to take credit for it... Cheers.9. From : Evetts (evettsaccount@yahoo.co.uk)

It has been mentioned that the new standard film back for the FM3a may also fit the FM2n. Does anyone know where I might be able to buy one as a replacement for my FM2n back? Any suggestions most appreciated.. thanks!10. On 11 May 2001 I bought a Nikon FM2N on its reputation as being a quality camera that would last me a long time without problems. Something I could depend on. On 28 June 2002, merely 48 days AFTER the warranty expired, the light meter quit functioning. New battery (x2) has not solved the problem, cleaning the contacts has not solved the problem, assuring the battery was not upside down has not solved the problem. Bottom line, my cheap point and shoot camera (not a Nikon) has turned out to be more dependable.
OK, venting is over. Any opinions on whether it is more cost effective to repair the camera or opt for a new camera (which would probably be a different make)? Does Nikon have a webpage or email address? I would like to give them my customer's opinion. PS- Camera has not been dropped, been exposed to moisture, etc. Taken better care of it than it turns out to be worth.
