Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Hi guys,

I recently inherited my father's Nikon FM (1979 model i think), which had not been used for more than 10 yrs! There was film in there too! I was able to take one picture and before the film finished and then the whole screen/image went black and since then has stayed that way and the shutter does not click. I have taken the film out.

Does it need a new roll of film to get the image back on the view finder/screen and shutter to click, or does it need new batteries?

Thanks,

Lisa

I inherited an all-black body nikon fm2 from my grandfather a few months ago and i've been messing around with it, i've had a few rolls developed and i love the pictures. i want to get a fisheye lens but 1. i'm scared to death to buy anything since i don't know what is compatible, i've read the fm2 basic instructions page on mir.com at least a dozen times but i just want to be totally sure 2. i'm about to go to college and although i do have a decent amount of money (mine, not my parents), i cant afford to be spending it right now. can anyone help me? my local camera store is not very helpful. thanks!

Just bought a Nikon FM (1979 or later, no knob around shutter release) at a charity auction with a Nikkor 24MM 2.8 Ai.

The camera looks new cosmetically, and everything seems to be working. I'm not sure about the meter yet but my guess is that it will work once I get my hands on some batteries. There is dust in the viewfinder.

The 24MM lens is a 9++, smooth as butter, no haze, mold, or external wear. The is one very small speck of debris that can only be seen through the camera. I mounted the lens to my D40 and it is beautifully sharp and clear, with no trace of the internal speck showing in the digital images. This lens is like new.

I have no plans of shooting with the FM body. I am starting a collection of my favorite SLRs, and this FM will be used for display.

I do want to sell the lens though, I'll likely put it on ebay.

I am looking for a cosmetically nice MD-11 or MD-12 (I don't care if it's working or not) to display the FM with. Anyone have something like that for a low price?

I paid $25.00 for the body and lens... I think that was a steal...

Thanks!

Hello Jack and Emilio:

I'd never encountered this until very recently and now all of a sudden they seem to be coming out of the woodwork. If you go to the "Lenses" forum you'll find a post about a 50/1.4 AIS Nikkor with this same mark. Apparently these items were manufactured under contract by ANAM/LEMIX in South Korea. I don't have any more information than that (and I'm not positive that even that is correct), and I don't want to publish my guesses; so hopefully someone out there who actually knows something about these can post some comments.

Here are some comments that I lifted from a Photo.Net forum, I hope that wasn't an unethical thing to do - it looks like it answers your question:
"......Back in (I think) the '80s Nikon licensed production of the FM2 to the South Korean company Anam Precision, who produced an FM2 'Lemix'. I would guess Nikon licensed the AIS 50/1.4 design as well. If so, it would be identical in construction details to the Nikkor, and Anam may very well have purchased the lens elements from Nikon for assembly....."

Dear emIlio apparently we are in the same boat my fm2 also has a small letter L on the body and on the 1.4 50mm lens I posted this just a few posts before you, but have received no info so far I have also searched the web but to no avail I only found one blurry pic on google images that seems to have the same letter L on the body, my only unlikely conclusions are: 1 all the cameras belonged to a photographer or a company that branded there kit with this mark, 2 our cameras were all repaired by the same company that for some reason marked them, 3 they have been modified in some way not known to us and they have been marked, 4 most unlikely but my favourite we both own a 1 in a million camera that is worth a feck load of cash.

Jack

Hello. I have had an FM2 for years and it is one very special camera to me. Recently I noticed that mine has something no other FM2 I've seen seems to have, which is a small cursive "L" in the front, close to the self timer lever. I have asked in stores, repair shops and all over the web and no one seems to know what this means. Today I came across an Ebay listing of a 50mm 1.4 ais where in one of the pictures the same symbol can be seen.
Any comments?
Thanks

Hi Darren:

Around the rewind knob there is a collar with a tab on the outboard side. Pull this tab toward the rear and, while holding it back, pull up on the rewind knob. The back should pop open. If it does not, it could mean that the light seals have gotten sticky and are holding the back closed ... in this case, while holding the rewind knob up against spring pressure, pull back gently with the fingers of your third hand (didn't say this was easy) on the exposed left-hand edge of the back door and it should come open.
