Modern Classic SLRs Series : |
The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Hi Toby: Check it again to be quite sure. The frame counter should advance even if there is no film in the camera at all.... it takes 3 wind/release cycles after you close the door to reach #1. If the frame counter is not advancing, this is not related to whether the film is advancing in the camera, it would be a separate problem. As to the film, sometimes you will not see the rewind knob rotate as you advance the film..... this is because there is some slack in the film inside the cassette. Even after you take a few shots, you still may not see it turn as you advance the film because it may rotate in between winds while you're not looking, gradually creating more slack. What you need to do to check is to wind the rewind knob clockwise until you feel resistance, and then wind the advance lever.... under these conditions you should see the rewind knob turn as the film advances.3. Hi, I'm from the UK and have just bought a used Nikon FM2 in order to learn photography from the basics up. I have just tried loading a film into it and it doesn't seem to be advancing properly. I have inserted the film into the take up spool and rotated it inwards, checking the film has been caught properly. Then I wind the film advance lever and the film advances correctly. However when I close the camera back and take a blank exposure then wind the film on again, the film does not appear to be advancing. The frame counter never reaches frame 1 and the rewind knob isn't moving.
Help! Is it me doing something stupid or have a bought a crap camera?! Please give me some advice, it would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot, Toby4. From : C. W. Niehaus (cwniehaus@ccrtc.com)

I recently bought the Nikon FM 10 manual SLR camera. I'm a complete beginner so I hardly knew what I was doing with it. I put in the batteries and followed the instructions to test it out. I moved the film advance lever to the ready position and then pressed the shutter release buton. The three LED lamps lit in the viewfinder. After that, I fiddled around with the lenses. I zoomed in and adjusted the focus and so forth. Then I tried out my seperate flashbulb that I had bought. I don't know what happened after that, but then the film advance lever got stuck in the ready position. I won't even go back to the original position now! And also, now when I look into the viewfinder and press the shutter release button, the lamp lights don't go on! I changed the batteries twice but nothing happened! I don't know what to do!!!!
PS- my camera has no film in it.6. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hola Wilfredo: Penso que comprendo su question, pero no puedo decir en espanol. The linkage between the lens and the meter in the FM2 tells the camera what aperture you have selected, and what the maximum aperture of the lens is. If you close down the diaphragm, the meter does not know that you have closed it down -- it thinks that the lens is still wide open and that there is less light in the scene.
You can take a light reading in the FM2 with the lens closed down to the working aperture, IF you have a lens that does not have linkage connecting it to the meter, or if you have the lens on an attachment, like a bellows or an extension tube, that does not connect the linkage from the lens to the camera. Most cameras of other brands also work this way. rick :)=9. From : WILFREDO (CICLOTETRYL@YAHOO.COM.AR)
