Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. I've got a FM3a, and there seems to be a problem. When the camera is "on", the red flash ready light/icon and the red exposure compensation indicator keep flashing alternately.

The camera still seems to shoot fine (firing blanks), do you have any idea what the problem is? Thanks so much! Weider.

I have just acquired a Nikon FM camera with 50mm/1.4 lens in immaculate condition. I want to add some more lenses to it, although I am neither a beginner nor a professional photographer. Can anyone please suggest what kind of NIKON lenses I should buy - a wide-angle and a zoom lens of what specifications. But these should cover almost all general situations. I do travel a lot, take pics from moving train, landscapes, people, markets, etc. CAN ANYONE REPLY IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE ONE OF MY FRIENDS IS COMING FROM DUBAI IN TWO WEEKS TIME. SO I WANT TO ASK HIM TO BRING SOME LENS. Thank you

Hi Sylvia: Since you used that lens on an FM, it would be an "AI" series lens. This should fit on any manual-focus Nikon body. Since you're looking for an automatic (I assume you mean automatic exposure, not automatic focus - correct me if I'm wrong on that), I would recommend the FE or FE2 as the automatics that are the most similar to your old FM in handling.

Even better, if you are interested in spending the money for a brand new camera as opposed to a used one, is the FM3a - this camera has replaced both the FM2 and the FE2, and it combines the features of both. It has automatic exposure control but the shutter will still operate of the batteries go dead. It is by all accounts an excellent camera, as were the FM and FE series before it. Being a new model, though, it will certainly be more expensive than the FE or FE2.

I had a Nikon FM camera many years ago, which was stolen. I used it with a 100/300 Macro Vivitar zoom that I still have but have never again used since then. Now I want to buy another used Nikon but manual and automatic, which I can use with this zoom. I would like to know please, which models fit with this zoom? I plan on buying it from eBay as they are much cheaper than in my country. Can you give me some advise please. - Thank you very much.

Hi Peter: I don't think you're doing anything wrong, you may just have discovered why it was so cheap. It sounds to me like maybe the shutter jammed (maybe a loose screw fell into the works or something) and then someone forced the speed knob and stripped or broke something in it. I believe it is possible to buy an entire replacement shutter for it; if the camera is in otherwise nice shape this might be worth the cost and effort. If not, you could sell your wind lever to Chuck......

Hi Chuck:

I looked at the sources I could think of off the top of my head and didn't find a wind lever. An active repair shop might have some FM parts bodies lying around that could donate one, so that's a fairly good bet. You could also watch eBay for a broken camera, buy it for the parts you need and then resell what's left of it - there are usually people looking for parts cameras.
