Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. Hi, love your site. I have a FM (s/n starts with 311) and I am looking for a motor drive (daughter now at art college!). The original manual lists the MD-11 as the preferred accessory, but would the MD-12 work OK - as from your info on motor drives, it seems the better choice (and a bit easier to get hold of too)?

Many thanks

My FM's mirror stayed up during an exposure I made and wont go back down on its own. The shutter is either deployed or undeployed; I can't tell and don't remember feeling it move. The shutter release can be pushed down but doesn't do anything and the advance lever won't go past the ready position. I've tried fiddling around with other controls and the shutter release lock but nothing seems to release the mirror. A low battery woulden't do this as it only powers the meter, would it? Happenned to anyone? Any suggestions for fixing it myself before taking it in to a camera store?

I just would like to ask if my Nikon MH-52 charger can be repaired. Because it's not charging anymore. Or is there a universal charger for this? Please reply at my email address nanz_31@yahoo.com.

Thank you.

I'm looking for information about using NiMH or lithium batteries in MD-12 (or MD-15) motor drives with my FM3a (and FA). It is specifically stated in the FM3a manual that only alkaline AA batteries can be used in the DB-2 cold-weather battery pack, but I haven't found anything official about the motor drives. Has anyone had positive confirmation from Nikon that NiMH or Lithium batteries are ok to use in these motor drives (MD-12/MD-15)?
thanks,

Hi Pei:

You may not be doing anything wrong, but just in case, here's the routine: There's a collar under the rewind knob that you have to rotate in order to release the knob so you can lift it. While rotating the collar, pull up on the rewind knob. After it has come up about 1/2 inch, you will feel some resistance... this is the spring of the back latch. Keep pulling and the back should pop open.

If you do all of the above and the back does not open, the light seals have probably become sticky with age and are holding it back. In this case, while holding the rewind knob up against spring pressure with one hand, pull the back open with your other hand (it opens at the end where the rewind knob is; the hinge is at the opposite end, below the advance lever)
