Modern Classic SLRs Series : |
The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

I own an FM series Nikon bought in 1982. I love the camera and it takes excellent pictures. It is in need of some minor repair on the film winder and I don't think I'm the one for the job. I live in northern Iowa and was wondering if you know of a place I could take or send it to. Thanks3. From : mike (moehle1@umbc.edu)

Mr Fung: Yes. I agreed with you, the FM-10 is badly made. I am not happy at all when I had one for my kid (asked someone buy for me in Hong Kong). I have used the FE2 and still keeping my Nikon F2A for the last 20 years - no problems, no crack down... I am not so sure with this new camera. After decades of making fine cameras, I don't understand why Nikon cameras are made in this manner now ..strange. Someone told me it was made in China ?5. From : Ed Wallace (eww3@hotmail.com)

I have notice dust/debri inside the viewfinder hood. How do I get inside to remove the hood and rid myself of this irritant? Also I find buying the ruuber hood eyepiece a real pain with this camera as it gets in the way when loading and unloading the film..6. From : Bennet Fung (bytfung@netvigator.com)

Dear All, I am from Hong Kong. I just bought a FM10 today. It is a bundle package with Camera body, 35-70mm / f3.5-5.6 zoom, Camera case (vinyl, I think), strap, battery (LR44). All together about US$237. Previously I asked the shop keeper, he said that this camera and lens were made in Thailand. But when I inspect the camera after I bought. All the camera body, lens, carrying case were marked made in Japan.
The craftmanship is quite bad indeed, the lens and the body has such a light weight as toy. The lens is lighter than a standard 50mm f/1.8 of which I own. The serial number of the camera body is actually engraved at the bottom with black painting numbers. But the engravement is so light that part of the first 2 number character is faint and the paint goes off. The sound of the shutter seems to give me some confidence. It is more or less the same as my FM3A. I have been using FE2 years ago before it got stolen in 1988. I found the recent FM3A resembles much the old FE2, particularly the Aperture priority automatic mode. That is why I buy the FM10 for pure mechanical control.
I have read an article here saying that FM10 is made in China, but for mine is made in Japan. Were there different factories for different batch. Mine sereial number is 2525150. For the zoom lens, it is so light that you do not beleive that is glass lens. The shopkeeper says that it is 'fibre' lens - or plastic, I think he means. Can anybody tell? I found that the metal ring in other MF lens (chrome in color) is replaced by black plastic. And I think the lens barrel is plastic. I guess it must not be the standard Nikkor 35-70mm that Nikon is selling as individual product.7. From : joana deBelkadi (quimera@cruzers.net)

I have a Nikon FM (ser#3123683). The shutter jams. I am mechanical and have worked on the Minox camera. Can I fix this myself....or will I most likely need parts that are not available to me? Thanks for your help. Bob9. From : Rajendra Jaipuria (rajlakshmi@vsnl.com)

greetings all - i am in the process of deciding whether to purchase a FM3a or F3. i'm leaning very heavily towards the FM3a but have concerns about the 93% viewfinder (is that linear or area?), coupled with it's relatively low magnification (0.8X), and the low eye relief (14mm). one other issue that i have read about is that the meter needle only moves 1/2-2/3 of a stop when changing from f/2-f/1.4 when using f/1.4 lenses on the FM3a. has anyone else experienced this? looking forward to the feedback - stuart
