Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

This site is specifically created for some of these great SLR bodies by Nikon, its creator. Dear Gen, thank you. I am not new to the SLR cameras (Zenit E, Practica MTL3, = Flexaret VI user, of course these are pretty different) - I am new to = the Nikon FM3 and I do not want to spoil "the party" (as the Beatles = sing). This is why I asked the another question - about the flash = compatibility. Of course, in the future I intend to buy the original = Speedlight but not just right now.=20 Anyway I do appreciate your answer=20 As we in Slovakia say: "Good light to you all" Lubo

Based on your question, I would presume you must have been new to SLR photography, so I will explain more in detail. The FM3a offers two basic modes for exposure control (ambient light), aperture priority AE (With the shutter ring set at "A" setting. Onced you press the unlock button at the centre while turning the ring to any other settings means you are in manual exposure control. In "A", all shutter speeds are governed by automatic stepless timing control and there is NO neccessity to adjust shutter speed ring anymore (the camera selected speeds are in accordance to the camera's suggest combination of shutter speed based on the aperture you have selected for a good exposure). On the other hand, all settings in the manual speeds are freely movable to other speeds and you need not have to press the center button anymore. When you are "out" from the "A", all shutter speeds will be depend on user (in accordance to select any preferred aperture to get a good exposure). If you don't understand some of the terms used, please refer to two useful sections here:

I have recently purchased the FM3. From the manual I could not find whether it is necessary to keep the A mode unlock button while changing speed(s) in manual mode. It seems a bit uncomfortable to operate the speed circle while keeping the button pressed down. another question - I do not have a Speedlight - I have an old Revuenon 35 that takes 4 1.5 V batteries, is it possible to use it? Lubo

I'm thinking of buying a Nikon FM camera - I wonder about what Film speeds it can take. I've been using Fuji NPC 160 film and really like it - can I use it in the Nikon FM? (I can't see the film speeds in the images on the web.)

hi all, I have the option of a Black or Chrome FM3a. Thoughts? I read that the black will be rarer someday.

Would you please provide me, if possible only, the costs of Nikon FM2 cameras. I know there must be a wide variation in costs, depending upon the condition of the cameras. I owned an FM2, and my daughter accidentally and irreperably damaged the focal plane shutter. I would love to find something that would replace that wonderful camera. Maybe you have some ideas that are helpful - i.e., in terms of price, availability, and so forth. Can you offer any suggestions? The web offers a lot of information, but there is so much out there that I thought I might put my questions to you. Sincerely, Eric Wik

Finally, I can find a serious write-up featuring the Nikon FM3A and FM2n on the Internet. Michael Liu is such a knowledgeable and dedicated person. To give all the information and details is not at all an easy task. One word to summarize my experience after days browsing this website - Awesome ! Cheers ! By the way, thank you....
