Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Nikon FM Series SLR camera models - Message Board/Guestbook

The Nikon FM Series is the longest serving model and the popular 35mm mechanical SLR in the market. In a series of fine camera design and manufacturing, Nikon introduced the Nikon FM dating back to 1977 which remains until today with a series of variations and updates. As every individual photographer has his own personal style to express himself visually while at the same time, maintain his own photographic equipment in a very personal manner, This section allows you to share mutual knowledge & experience among all Nikon FM series camera users. Some of the opinion presented in this site was very personal I hate to see them affecting a decision regardless it is an acceptance or rejection any of the models within the series. So, here is a section dedicated to all of you where you may also present yours. I do hope it is beneficial to all of you. Enjoy.

Please help, my FM's film advance level wont advance! I dont know why but heres the situation:

-I advanced the lever all the way and now;
-It can move the 35 degrees from resting to ready but no further.
-The shutter button can depress but wont take a picture.

Nothing I can do makes a difference! Please help! I have an FM, not an FM2.
Thanks in anticipation.

Help, Please.

I have no idea why, but the film advance lever on my Nikon FM has either got stuck, jammed, or i've done something wrong. I fully pressed the lever all the way, then when it returned I couldn't take a picture because when I pressed the shutter release button, nothing hapened, and now i cant wind the level, as it wont go past the 35 degree position, but will return to resting position.

I know it's long winded, but i really need this camera for the 15th, so reply quickly!

The hand grip is just an added on accessory to facilitates easier grip and shooting. It is not that expensive, should work fine with your camera. (I have one for my Leica, works for the last 15 years..). It is not exotic, but simply serves its purpose.

Does anyone of our fellow Nikon folks tried out this accessory "Grip" fro FM2 ? www.photoequip.net nd click on the Nikon FM2 link at the side menu ? Wondering if this works and how reliable is it.

Hi Ahsan:

That doesn't sound real good. One thing that it could be, though, is a stuck AI ring just behind the lens mount flange. The ring is spring-loaded toward the f/2 end, and the lens pushes it toward f/16 as you turn the aperture ring... if it gets sticky with dirt (there's nothing to protect it), it can stick at the stopped-down end of the scale once the dirt becomes stronger than the return spring.

Remove the lens and check that the AI ring moves freely and snaps back instantly when you push the tab counter-clockwise and then let it go. If it's sticking, a drop of lighter fluid around the edges may free it up at least for a short term fix.

If that isn't it, it should probably be sent for service; a 4-stop error is not likely to be an adjustment problem, something's on the fritz. They can make sure everything's clean and working right while they're at it.

For the USA and Canada, there is a directory of camera repair services at http://www.acecam.com/srindex.html ... can't help you in other countries, though.....

Hello everyone!

I just picked up a well used FM2n and I have not even loaded my first roll of film in it yet and I have found what I think is a problem.

I have two 50mm lenses - a f/1.2 AI-s and an f/1.8 AF-D. I put the 50mm f/1.8D on my D40x and metered a scene for exposure. I got 1/30th of a sec at f/2 at ISO 400.

I then used the f/1.2 AI-s on my FM2n and metered the same scene and I got 1/500th of a second at f/2 and ISO/ASA 400.

What gives? I'm a little concerned about this so I have not even loaded film into it yet - I was really looking forward to metering with all my AI-s lenses.

I just replaced the batteries and there is no change.

Is there a way to calibrate the light meter? Or check if there is some dirt etc obstructing the photodiodes in the light meter?

I'd appreciate any tips!

Hi Philip:

Unless it's just a coincidence, the only thing that I can think of in a foam replacement that could have anything to do with that problem would be if you replaced the mirror foam as well as the light seals, and selected a foam that was either too stiff or too thick and prevented the mirror from rising completely. This is a long shot though: in my FM2, although the shutter will not fire until the mirror rises past a certain point, that point is low enough that a thick foam at the top would not make it hang up. Still, it might be worth looking at that area ....
