Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hello Stefan: This behavior is normal for a one-touch zoom, but I believe in Nikkors there is an adjustment that can be tightened. Check with a local service shop.2. From : Bill (tworavens51@hotmail.com)

Hello, I own a Nikkor 4,5/80-200mm S/N 829122, The focus/zoom ring moves very easily so if you move the camera down it will move to 80mm, if you move it up it will go automatically to 200mm. someone says that it is typically for this zoom. I believe it is a malfinction. Is it possible to repair such a lens? Thank you for your comments Stefan from Germany5. From : rick (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Luis:
The "Non-AI" series lenses do have an automatic diaphragm. But as you have found, they do not have the meter coupling ridge for the FE camera. So, if you have the lens set to - say - f/8, the meter is looking through the wide-open lens at f/2.8, and when you take the picture the lens will close down to f/8 and the meter still thinks it is at f/2.8... so you get a bad underexposure.
To use the Non-AI lens, you need to stop the lens down before your exposure by pressing the depth-of-field preview lever and holding it while you press the shutter release. This will allow the meter to read the actual amount of light that the film will see, and your exposure will be correct.
In most cases you can have your Non-AI lens converted to AI specs so that you can use it conveniently; it is usually not very expensive to have it done. On the other hand, many AI lenses are not very expensive either, so you might be able to buy and AI lens, sell your Non-AI lens and come out ahead.6. From : Luis Gustavo Rocha (lgdalla@gmail.com)

Hello Guys! A few days, I bought at e-bay a Nikon FE, with a Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 non AI (model K (pre AI lenses). The FE is a "auto" camera, that works fine with AI and AI-S lenses. In other hands, is very usefull with older nokkor lenses. In other words, works with all nikkor lenses. But in order to work fine with those older nikkor lenses, the user have to do some tricks to take the shots, in the way that older lenses is non AI or AIS lenses, and not works "directly" in "auto" mode.
Ok. About my lens, is a older nikkor, manufactured in 1972/73, and is a non AI/AIS.
My question is: I already discover such lens don't have a meter coupling ridge. Ok. But my doubt if this lens have automatic diaphragm. It have a automatic diaphragm? Thanks for your help!7. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Deadly: Is the lens mounted on a camera? In the FD mount, the aperture diaphragm is disabled unless the lens is mounted.8. From : Deadly (deadly@tigerdive.co.uk)

Craig - 1) Yes, a hood should help that - that's their main purpose. Wide angle lenses are particularly susceptible to flare, also. 2) No it shouldn't fit loosely, it should be nice and snug. Lens hoods from this era generally achieve their fit by way of nylon bushings inside the mounting ring that create friction with the bayonet lugs on the outside of the lens' front mounting ring, the filter threads being on the inside. Those bushings in the hood wear out. You can glue new pieces of material into those slots in the ring to re-establish friction. You don't have to use nylon, I've used strips of styrene and other plastics. HTH ken10. Recently, I got a 28mm f2 lens for my AE-1P, and I noticed a couple prints that had what looked like lens flare in the upper righthand corner near the top. Will a lens hood help that?
So then I got a lens hood for my 28mm f2 in the mail, and I went to try it out over the weekend. It is the correct hood. Its the BW-52B, but I haven't gotten the prints back yet.
I have two questions:
First, should it fit on the lens rather loosely? When I put the hood on, its easy to move the hood accidently.
Second, is there a way to make the lens hood be a little tighter?
Thanks for the help.
Craig
