Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Hello, I am looking at a 28-70 lens for my Pentax K1000. A dealer showed me a Promaster lens that would work for my manual focus camera for 150 dollars new. Now I have never heard of this brand. WOuld anyone recommend it for their good pictures, ease of use, durabilty? Is there any other type of brand lenses you would recommend w/o them being a fortune? I have looking for a 28 up lens, or even just a 35 mm lens! Thanks for any help, forwarding your answer to jderr664@itol.com is greatly appreciated! Thanks -Jim Derrig

MY NIKKOR 28MM 3.5 HAS A LITTLE BIT OF CONCENTRICAL PLAY ON THE FOCUSING RING. ACTUALLY THE PLAY IS BETWEEN TWO PARTS OF THE LENS - SEPARATED BY THE SILVER MOUNTING RING. IT DOESN'T AFFECT THE FOCUSING AT ALL BUT IT'S JUST ANNOYING. DOES ANY BODY KNOW IF THIS IS REPAIRABLE? THANKS

I must add to my comment below that I was on the 4th floor of a building shooting exactly to the same level of the other building. We're not talking perspective distortion here, such as we'd get by pointing the camera upward or downward.

Subj: FD 85-mm f1.8 Pincushion distortion
I've always liked the 85 focal length for isolating subjects a little, especially for portraits. I shot a scene of a line of flags against a building from across the street in beautiful light. The horizontal lines of the building bow downward at the top. I can fix this by cropping, but what a disappointment. I expected better from Canon prime lenses. I will shoot it again with a Vivitar 90-mm macro, which pundits say has no distortion. Many lenses have a little pincusion or barrel distortion, but I'm sad to see it in one I otherwise like. Anyone else notice this in this lens? Did I just get a bad sample? I also got rid of a 100 f2.8 SSC, because I could never get a sharp image out of it. Guess I have to shell out for an L if I'm so attached to the 85.

I'm considering buying a 2x teleconverter to use with fd lenses under 200 mm to increase the versatility of the lenses I already have. I'm going on an extended cycle tour so don't want to take too much gear. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is a good strategy vs buying zoom lenses, and whether it's worth paying extra for the Canon 2XB or whether another cheaper one would be suitable.
Thanks for any help
Richard

Mary - Canon L lenses contain either low dispersion glass or fluorite lens elements, or both, and usually have better, more solid mechanical construction. They will especially perform better at or near wide open apertures (they will be sharper). I think they are well worth the extra cost. If you click on the Canon FD link at the top of this page, you will find a great deal of lens info. Listed is an 80-200mm, 80-200mmL with macro feature, and 200mm f4L macro (non-zoom) lens. You say you need action shots. For a 200mm (non-zoom) lens, you could consider a Canon FD 200mm 2.8, which would let in more light, and allow a faster shutter speed.

I have two Nikon F-2 bodies and one 50mm 1.4 Nikon lens. I have not used them for a long while, but would like to have them checked for proper functioning. Also would like to purchase another lens for the other camera. I want a very sharp, clear, very fast lens for available light photography. Subjects: people, bands in clubs, children, animals. Any advice will be appreciated.

I have a question concerning the Canon 80-200mm f/4 L. An employee at a camera store said he didn't see any difference in the "pro" lens other than the cost. Another photographer I spoke with said it was well worth the extra money. At the present I have a Vivitar 80-200mm f/3.5-5.3. I'm trying to get action shots, and have been frustrated with the results. Also, can you tell me how the 80-200mm f/4 L and 80-200mm f/4 L MACRO FD compare? Is it just the fact that one has the Macro capability? Thank you

Clement, unless I'm more confused than I think I am, the Nikon FE2 is a manual focus camera designed for Nikkor AI series manual focus lenses. Autofocus Nikkors will also work, as the mounts are interchangeable between the manual and autofocus series.
