Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. Hi Terry:

I've been in those shops, they are very high pressure places and my basic advice would be to not even walk in the door. They tried (very hard) to sell me discontinued digital cameras with defective LCD screens, generic add-on lenses with names I've never heard of and other stuff for "special buy-it-now" prices that turned out to be way over retail. The New York shops I've been in were not that much better.

Before you walk into a camera store in a place like SF or NYC, do your homework carefully: check the prices at Jessops and reputable dealers like B&H, write them down, and look ONLY at the specific models that you have the information on. The street shops will try to switch you to some obscure model so that you can't compare prices, and I can assure you that it won't be a bargain. These guys have very high rent to pay, and the casual unprepared tourist who wanders in the door is their golden opportunity to grab some extra cash.

Interesting to find this site about buying lenses from Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.
I got "duped" into buying a High Definition Digital Vision 0.45xAF Wide Angle Lens for my Sony HD Camcorder at a cost of over $600 (USD). Bought this on the last day of my holiday in San Francisco, had a feeling that something was wrong, but the Asians are very convincing with their chat about new lenses on the market for the new range of HD cameras. I have struggled to get any acknowledgement for true retail cost, both from checks on the internet, phones calls to the shop (never answer) and emails to the importer - PDSL International in New York USA.
The one thing that should have raised was my suspicion was the large quantity of these lenses on the shelf behind the counter. There must have been 20-25 of these lenses, and if the price I paid was true then that's a risky stock to hold in a small shop - don't think so!!!!
Am going to New York next year, may pay someone a serious visit.

Is the Nikkor 105 mm lens with a PN-11 extension tube compatible with the digital Fuji S5 Pro camera body? I am buying a camera body only and would like to know if i can still use my Nikkor lens for close-up photography.
Thanks.

Will my Canon Ex1 camcorder lens connect to a XL2 ?

I bought a nice OM2N with a 35-70mm f/3.6 Zuiko Zoom (http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/olympusom1n2/shared/zuiko/htmls/3570mm.htm).

Unfortunately the lens filter was smashed and broken during shipping. I was able to clear the broken glass and filter ring without any scratch to lens.
The lens seems in one piece and the only defect I note is that focusing to infinity the distance indicator in the barrel shows slightly offset, close to the 10m mark, is this something of concern o better to leave like that?

I will test this weekend with film but better to have some feedback to take care of.

Best regards.

Hi Terry:

In my opinion, no on both counts. I have Non-AI, AI, and AIS lenses and I see no difference in build quality though the style did evolve. I also don't think there is any reason to expect an AIS lens to necessarily be better optically than an AI.

Having said that, there is a substantial amount of time involved across these manufacturing series, and late AIS lenses may have more advanced coatings, and lighter build quality, than earlier ones.... I am not familiar with every series of every lens they made.

Ai / Ais trade-off?

What an amazing web site! Thank you to all who made it. I'm a newbie to photography and have read all the Nikon F2 and Nikkor lens pages, but I want to make certain my understanding is correct.

Is it correct to say that Ai mechanical build quality is better than Ais, but Ais newer coated optics are better than Ai?

I'm budgeting for an F2 and trying to figure out if I should be planning to look for Ai or AiS lenses. Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Terry

Hi Harry:

I don't have photos handy, but the "old" ("breechlock") FD mount has a silver ring at the rear of the lens... when mounting the lens, the lens itself is not rotated, you rotate the ring to lock the lens onto the body.

The "new" ("bayonet") FD mount lenses are all black with no ring at the rear, and have a square, silver button that you press to unlock the lens for removal from the camera. Upon pressing the button, you rotate the entire lens barrel counterclockwise to remove it.

Despite their different appearance and operation, the actual mount geometry of these two types is the same and they are interchangeable on all Canon FD series bodies.

I'm trying to find the difference between the the Fd mount and the "new Fd" mount. Can anyone direct me to a photo of the two?
Thanks

Hello John.
You are right.
I use my old high quality lenses on my D100 and D80.
Limitations: manual focus and manual exposure without meter but you get used to it and the screen gives you a great way to evaluate exposure. New lenses are not that great in optics unless they are the pro ones.
