Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. I have a nikkor-H 18cm f2.5 lens that is in great condition except for a sticky focusing ring.
I would like to clean and re-lube the focusing threads. I have partially disassembled it by removing the barrel, nearest the rear of the lens, with the tripod mount, and then removed the internally threaded focusing barrel that rotates inside it. Both were easily removed.
My problem is I do not know how to remove the actual focusing barrel, rotated by hand. Does anyone know how to do this or where i might find help, info or diagrams so i could do this without damaging the lens?
Thanks,
Henry Rancourt

Hi Roy:

Everywhere that I can see in this article, it says that the lens DOES feature "Full Time Manual" focusing. Can you point me to where this is contradicted?

I read your article on Canon EF 35-135mm 1:4-5.6 USM. The review and article contradict itself. Does this lens do FTM or not? Ebay and other places say yes, later you say no.

Would like to clarify this for others who want to buy this lens.

Hello Maurice:

I'm afraid I don't keep very up to date on this as Nikon continues to introduce new models... however, in general, the higher level Nikon DSLRs are fully compatible with AI and AIS series manual focus lenses. A few years back, models from D100 and up had full function with older lenses. Since then, the models with 4-digit numbers came out, and I believe these are in the "lower" category.

"Full function" in this case means that the light meter in the camera works correctly. Of course, you do not get autofocus with the older lens. In the lower level cameras, the lens will still mount to the camera, the auto diaphragm function works... but the light meter does not work, so you don't get any of the auto modes and you have to guess the exposure settings in manual mode. But within those limitations, I believe the manual lenses are usable on all of the Nikon DSLRs.

Is there a Nikon Digital body that can be used with ordinary (analogue) non-AF lenses? It seems a shame that they have to be dicarded when turning to Digital. Would be very grateful fo an answer. M.

EF 35 2.0 Adjusting Option ??

Hello,

my EF 35 2.0 is not the sharpest on earth. I wonder if there are any adjusting options (e.g. like the solder pad af adj0 and adj1 on the EF 50 1.8) on the flex board.

There are some solder points on the flex board (circuit board), I tried bridging them already, but with no significant change.

So, has anybody got the service manual and could give me some hints ??
Or is there a source to get / buy the manual online ??

NASA NIKKOR LENS
I have a question perhaps you can help. I have a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f2.8 lens which was owned by NASA and was flown on a Shuttle flight. There are no serial numbers which are on the lens engraved by Nikon as other lenses produced by Nikon all have. There is a series on NASA numbers which seem to have been engraved at the time of manufacture and an incised number which appears that it may be a serial number but this number does not fit any of the indexes of lens serial numbers provided by Nikon. Is there a way to find out how many lens es of various kinds were manufactured by Nikon for Nasa. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Dr. Barry Ragone

Hi Michael:

I'm afraid that, for practical purposes, it's that last thing. There are adapters available to use your Canon FD mount lenses on a Canon EOS digital camera, but your choices are either (1) to only be able to use the lens at very close distances, or (2) to lose a significant amount of sharpness, while at the same time substantially reducing the angle of view of the lens. Add to this manual focusing and the fact that the viewfinder darkens as you stop the lens down (which you HAVE to do to get any usable quality at all when using the (2) type adapter), and the disadvantages aren't worth the cost savings.
