Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hi, I have a NIKON-N-70 SLR Camera with a Tamron 28-200 zoom lense. When I look through the view finder to take a picture,I see a velvet like, dotted light colored purple coat. I was told by a friend that this is the lense coatong. Is this correct? and does this affect the quality of the picture?
Thanks,Your help is greatly appreciated!!

I am very amateur at taking pictures. I just bought a canon Rebel 2000 and want to add a lens. Some type of telephoto/zoom. I would like to do some wildlife (nothing dangerous) and scenery pictures besides kids and grandkids. My camera came with a 35-80mm lens. I am looking for suggestions please. Thank you in advance.

Santiago Triana. I'm looking at a 1984 Nikon Lens catalog.
No, Nikon didn't have an IF version of that lens. At that time they had a
AF 200mm f3.5 IF-ED
200mm f2 IF-ED
200mm f2.8 IF-ED
300mm f2 IF-ED
300mm f4.5 IF-ED
The main advantage of an IF lens is that it is shorter and lighter. They say their is a little better focusing with close focusing long lens.

Hi Dawn, In answer to your questions: The OM 1n has an led in the viewfinder showing flash ready / correct flash exposure, the Om 1 does not go to http://www.star.ucl.ac.uk/~rwesson/esif/om-sif/bodygroup/om1.htm
for more information and the manual. If the meter is intermittent it could be a bad battery connection, I think that Rick posted a message not long ago saying that it might be possible to cut back the wire to the battery connection until you get to good metal and resolder it. If you take it for repair make sure you take it to someone who has expertise in Olympus repairs. It might be worth getting a full check on it, possibly it may need new light seals and a good clean, other than that there really isn't too much to go wrong. From memory the Vivitar Series 1 lenses were pretty good lenses but tended to be a little on the large size and quite heavy as a result of using good quality materials and opting for large apertures. The 28 to 105 should cover a lot of your needs from landscape to portrait. I would use it for a while and see what other focal lengths you may need. Personally I find that I use the Zuiko 37-70 f3.5/4.5 a lot due to its small size and low weight, I also use the 75-150 f4. Both lenses deliver sharp results with good contrast but if you want a faster lens and even better results the Olympus prime lenses offer good value. I use the 28mm f2.8, 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 135mm f3.5, couldn't justify the cost of the 85mm or 100mm primes but maybe one day I will succumb. I would also recommend the T32 flashgun, powerful, reasonably easy to find secondhand and relatively small for the power, other.wise the T20 usually goes with me wherever I go as it slips into a pocket easily. good luck Shaun

One question: My OM-1 camera came with Vivitar Serids 1 Macro Focusing zoom lens, 28-105 mm, 1:28-3.8, F 2.8-22 lens. What can you tell me about this lens, and what other lenses should I hope to acquire? Thanks! Dawn

Ed - I'm far from a lens repairman, but it's been my experience that very occasionally the auto aperture lever - the one with the angled base - on the back of the lens will get stuck in one extreme of its play. Perhaps if that has happened and you can get it unstuck it will free up your blades.

Sherry - You don't mention what range zoom lens you want, but one of the best in the FD line is the 35-105mm constant f/3.5 zoom. (there's also a f/3.5 - 4.5 version that's not as good, although probably still quite good.) It's a two-touch zoom - seperate zoom and focus - and at the 35mm end it has a close-up setting, called "macro" but that's a bit of a stretch. It is a nice close-up feature though. The only downside to this lens is its 72mm filter thread,(expensive filters) and its rotating front element, only a problem when using a polarizer.

On the longer side, a very well-regarded lens is the Vivitar Seies 1 70-210mm lens. The early Vivitar Series 1 lenses were superb, most made by Tokina or Kiron. There is also a 28-90 that is supposed to be great. I have also heard very good things about the FD 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom, and the FD 28-85mm f/4 lens. That's just a taste, but if you tell us what you want to use it for, people I'm sure will have other ideas. Ken

I recently received my parents Canon AE1 (after I lost my camera). I would like some recommendations on zoom lenses that will work well with this camera. Any ideas? Sherry

Hi, I have a Canon FD 80-200L zoom lens. The lens appature stays in the wide open position and no longer stops down. This change was sudden and it not related to any apparent damage to the lens. I have made several attempts to "reset the appature by sliding the attachment ring around and working the appature ring to its extremes with no success. Does anyone know of a simple fix or an instruction manual for working on this lens. Ed McDoanald
