Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. I hate to ask a stupid question, but this site so far has provided me with the most relevant infomation on SLRs and their use. I have recently purchased a Minolta X700 on eBay and have been very excitied to be getting back into photography since art school but am playing catchup and spending too much time on the technology side of the art. It appears this optics area doesn't address the MD and MC class of minolta lenses. Minolota of course doesn't provide info on these lenses as well.
My question is general about the lenses availble for the x700, and which are the best to invest in. I know there are many variables to consider including intended use, but as a general use to more artist endevors like landscape and wildlife photography which companies and types work best with the x700. I know the program mode only works with MD types mentioned in this site, but I received with the camera a MC auto with a MD tab and label on the fstop ring, so this must work in program mode. Then you see all of the MD mount types available from other companies and I have trouble finding resources on the lenses. I want to take pictures with a quality set of lenses that take advantage of the x700 abilities. Is there a site that charts in detail the manual Minolta lenses? What's a better lense MD or MC? I'm not even sure which is a newer lense, or what the names stand for. Thanks Tom3. From : Vigneshwar Baliga (baliga_vignesh@yahoo.co.in)

Hi Gen Holst ! My Problem is, the 46mm to 49mm / 52mm ring step up converter is not available here. As there is no market demand for 46mm. I was told very few people have lense of 46mm Dia. And as you said 52mm is pretty easily available as most of the camera have this Dia lense. So I hit apon this Idea of joining this 46mm filter to 49mmto 52mm converter. Since 46mm filter will have external dia of (may be) ~48mm, and i'll have to fill in 0.5mm all around the 46mm filter to fit in 49mm to 52mm converter. Well, I am not sure the effects of having a Poleriser, Filter, Close up lense etc of 52mm and my lense of 46mm, As I'll make the ring converter ..so there is always a chance that it's not Perfect Parallel to Film !!!, and the close up lense centre may not co-inside with the camera lense .. and dont know what effects it may cause ? Of course if there 46mm to 52 available here I'll buy, else this is what I believe I'll have to do . :-(Any suggeston, or note of caution ? -- Vignesh Baliga4. From : Norbert (nmeijering@hotmail.com)

Larry, This will not work. The EOS cameras use the new EF mount while the older F, A and T cameras by Canon use the FD and/or FL mount. It's not only a matter of electronis for the AF and the metering but also the mount design itself is totally different and not compatible. Norbert5. From : Larry Barcum (barcum47@htc.net)

Buy a step-down filter accessory ring. Buy a filter with larger diameter and buy a filter with smaller diameter will do th trick, I think HAMA makes such step-down/up rings. Next thing to consider is - 52mm filters are always cheaper and readily available everywhere, so see if it has a 52mm - 46mm ring to fit your needs.7. Hi ! I hope I am not Off Topic, But need to know this... I am a beginner, and have an old camera (Zenit) with Fixed 56mm lense. The filter dia of this lense is 46mm. I want some Close up lense for Learning Macro Photography, but the close up lense is not available (here), So I tried looking for 46mm dia to 49mm or 52mm dia, but dint find any :-
([My Question:] So I want to know ... Can I buy a *Cheap* 46mm filter(UV) and a 49mm *Cheap" filte , Remove the glass of both and connect both the ring ?, In doing So, the lenght increases, and the center is not aligned, it won't be Co-axial. Will that creat any problem ? Pls give me your valuable suggn.Regards Vignesh Baliga8. From : Santiago Triana (repepo@yahoo.com)

George bueno: Absolutely. Most AF zoom lenses can be used with your FM-10 EXCEPT the G-series Nikkor lenses. I have heard of a lot of cases where the inexperienced retailers have often misled others into buying such kind of NEW AF zooms to bundle in with an entry camera such as FM-10. Stupid ! Try here to see the difference: http://www.nikonusa.com/usa_group/group.jsp?cat=1&grp=5
it states : 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor and a 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Zoom-Nikkor - the second one with the "G" in the lens description is NOT usable with your MANUAL FOCUS Fm-10 camera !10.
