Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

Rick Oleson thanks a lot, I will do your advise. I feel better that there is a way to use my lenses when I go digital.

Hi Dr. Hayhurst:

Look for "AI" or "AIS" series lenses for your FM. You can use older "Non-AI" lenses, but you have to flip up the little tab on the coupling ring behind the lens mount before you attach the lens to the camera, and then you have to press the depth-of-field lever to take a meter reading.... not very convenient. Most AF lenses will work too, though of course they will not give you automatic focus and you'll be paying extra for features that you can't use, and they are not as ruggedly built as the manual focus lenses. AI and AIS are your best bets.

Hi Kevin:

What he probably meant was that "it did that since he dropped it". If you can't send it back, your choices are to live with it until it gives up, send it in for service or try to fix it yourself. I don't recommend the latter, unless you consider it disposable.

What lenses can I use on my Nikon FM? What lenses can I not use? What are the lenses that work best on the Nikon FM? Thanks.

I just bought a Canon FD 80-200mm f4 from ebay. Unfortunately, the zoom ring sticks--so bad sometimes it feels like you are breaking it. Seller claims thisis normal and "it did that since it was new". When I shake the lens, it sounds like there is sand in it along with somethign more substantial knocking around. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to fix this?

Hi Jammer:

Your lenses will fit, but you will have no light metering of any kind. If you get a Canon or Olympus DSLR, you can use your Nikon lenses with an adapter and get normal light meter operation in manual and aperture priority automatic modes.

Actually I already sent this question to the other board but I think it is much appropriate here. My question is: Will my lenses and converter for FM10 will fit to any other Nikon Digital Cameras like Nikon D50 (6.1 Megapixel SLR)? I will appreciate any suggestion and comments.

Ignatius: yes, any Canon FD lens aperture can be set manually. Just be aware that some low end models like the T50 does not offer much in this situation. Others (i.e. A-1, T90) requires to set aperture on the camera dial when using aperture priority. The AV-1, AL-1 and T60 use the aperture set on the lens when in aperture priority mode. When working in manual or stop-down mode, aperture is always set directly on the lens.
