Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. Don, There are two main types of FD lenses. FDn are the newer type n=new.
The new type is attached to the camera by twisting the lens barrel appr. 1/4 turn to it locks witha click.
The older type type is fixed to the camera by turning a chrome lock ring. Both lenses have the same functions and can be used with any F, A and T-series camaras.
The newer lenses are usually smaller and lighter then their older cousins, and also quicker ti change. The older type may perhaps be more sturdy (expecialy the mount) and give less feel of plastic

Doug,

There is two adaptors that make you use the FD lenses on a EOS body. One is called Macro adapter and does not preseve infinity focus. The other is intended only for long L lenses. It contains optics to focus to infinity, and gives a 1.2x teleconverter effect. It protudes into the lens, so any lens wich take the FD 1.4x converter should fit this adapter, that means >300mm.

I have no ide of where to get theese adapters other than searching the net.

Ketil

Ken & Jomar: Ken, Jomar described that lever exactly as it’s used for, these lock levers were used on the early FD lenses and were replaced with the I believe second generation FD lenses. Again Jomar gave an accurate description on how it works, I think Canon was making the FD lenses a little smaller a lighter to go with the then new A series cameras. Winston

I have a Takumar 300mm lens with a screw on mount. I'm looking for an adapter ring so I can use the lens on my Nikon N5005 camera. Does anyone know where I can find one of those rings?

Ken: Ordynary breech lock lenses can be set to stopped down meetering mode by pressing the the automatic aperture lever counterclocwise until it automaticly locks. Yoyr lens is of a rare type that has an extra lever(hook)to keep the aperturelever in outer position: Push the automatic aperture lever fully counterclockwise, then push the lock lever to "L".

This is useful if you intend to use non-automatic equioment between the lens and the camere. Different types of close up for instance. Be sure to reset the the automatic aperture lever to its normal position before mounting the lens directly on the camerera. In case of a lens with a lock lever, switch it backto the position with the dot.
I have personaly never seen this kind of lens, but found it described under "Shooting with Close-up accesories" in the user manual for the AE-1 program wich can be found here.

Greetings,
I have a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lense and there is a feature that is not present on any other of my FD lenses. Where the pins etc. are located, there is a small teardrop shaped lever with a red "L" next to it that can be moved back and forth, and seems to lock into one position. What is this for? Stop down metering does not seem to work with this lense. Any ideas?
Many thanks

April - Try Steven40@aol.com. He is located is Reno, Nevada, U.S.A. He is a Canon specialist, very fast turn-around time, and very skilled and experienced. He has done several excellent repairs for me, on T90 and several FD lenses. Very reasonable cost.
