Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Hi Gary:
I'm not fortunate enough to have an EOS1 to try out, but I have tried to mount my EF-S 18-55 lens on my daughter's film Rebel: The lens will not mount to the camera. The film camera has a shallow ledge above the focusing screen with which the -S lens interferes so it can't reach the bayonet.
I can't say if other film EOS cameras are the same, but I suspect that this was done on purpose to prevent cross-mounting. The -S lens, of course, would not cover the 35mm frame in any case if it could mount, so it would not be very satisfactory (but I was curious to see just what it would do).
I don't know if there would be a mirror clearance problem with the lenses, but it's a moot point if the bayonet won't accept them.2. From : Gary Rowan Higgins, Moderator, EOS 1N message board (nomail@encable.net.au)

I had an enquiry this morning from a new EOS 1N user who wanted to know if he could use Canon's EF-S series lenses and Canon's digital-dedicated lenses on the EOS 1N. As far as I know the digital lenses may strike the mirror. Has any forum user concrete experience of this mix?
Feedback welcome.
Thanks.

Hi Marv:
Different people have different definitions for the term "low priced". By my standards, no 400mm f/4.0 is going to make that cut. At that kind of length, it's probably a fair guess that your cost will double for every f/stop of speed you add.
If you're thinking in the ~ $100 range, the 500mm f/8 lenses (the long glass ones, not the mirrors) in my opinion offer good performance for a very reasonable cost; at 400mm, there is a very similar lens with an f/6.3 speed at about the same cost. These are T mount lenses, manual focus with manual preset diaphragms: a very simple construction that saves on cost while maintaining decent optics.
The mirrors in that price range, in my experience, have been a serious disappointment; the glass lenses are far superior in sharpness and contrast for the same money.
Obviously, in both the glass and the mirror category, $1000 buys a much better lens than $100, so your budget does matter.4. From : marv goldsher (marvgoldsher@comcast.net)

Looking for a good but low priced sports-nature lens for a pentax mount. Photography is new to me...a used lens that's good would suffice. I assumed a 500m f/8 would be the way to go...But the f/8 appears to be a not so good limitation. What about a 400m f/4. Any thoughts...I want to try not only sports and nature...but be unobtrusively far enough away from human subjects to shoot candid expressive close-ups. I want to fill the frame. Needs to be a manual lens. I bought a Phoenix 500 mirror...which I think was possibly a 110 dollar mistake.5. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Shannon:
The short answer is "No". There are adapters, but they do not work well and are a waste of money. Either keep your old lenses to use on your old camera, or sell them and put the money toward a lens to fit the EOS camera.6. From : Shannon (sahalsaver@verizon.net)

Hi Howard:
The Sony Alpha is designed to work with lenses from the Minolta Maxxum autofocus 35mm SLR series. The manual focus lenses that you have are a different mount and will not fit. I don't think there is an adapter to make them fit, but I am not positive about that.8. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi John:
Here's my basic understanding of the Nikon lens situation: Manual focus Nikon mount lenses can be used on Nikon DSLRs. However, on models below the D200, the light meter will not work at all.
Nikon lenses can also be used with an inexpensive adapter on Canon and Olympus DSLRs. In these cases, the light meter does work, but you have a manual diaphragm (the viewfinder darkens as you stop down the lens).9. From : Howard (hrood1@excite.com)

I have a minolta x-700 film camera with a wonderful set of lens that I used all through 1980-1990. I was wondering if they could be used on the sony alpha100 (without the auto focus)? I know that the sony site says that lens going back 25 years can be used.
Thanks in advance10. Hi:
I have several nikkorlenses, which I use with my non digital nikons. I understand the Digital nikon slr cameras can be used with some limitations, with the older lenses. Is this correct? Any advise and information will be much appreciated.
