Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. I got a AE-1 program recent from someone else, but I found that when I set the mode to program and aperture to A, the red LED always flashed with 16, when I use the manual mode, no matter what I adjust the shuttle and aperture, the red LED always with "32", I do not know whether it is normal, thanks for your answer.2. Emilio, I think I can help you out here I have had three of these lenses and currently own a very nice example. I'll start with the most important part of your question. $200.00 is way to much to spend for this lens. This lens averages $120.00 on ebay all three of mine have been under $100.00 when purchased on ebay. And all were keepers (the other two now belong to friends) This is a very under rated lens we have all gotten very sharp and high contrast images with ours. Now question #2 mount the lens to your F-1 with the aperature on the A setting next turn the aperature setting ring to F32 now push your stop down lever (your self timer lever) towards the lens while your are looking through the lens with light coming in the viewfinder. You should see the aperature stop down if you do not then there could be something wrong with the lens. Is your 85mm f1.8 marked S.S.C. period in red letters? If it is then the way the aperature lever works in the back of the lens is different then on this nFD mount lens. This style of mount needs to be mounted to the camera in order to get the aperture to stop down. Hope this helps you may email me direct if you need more help. Mark W.

Hi, I have the chance to buy a FD 75-200mm 1:4.5 zoom for my F1 (old) but I have a couple of questions. First is how can I check that the aperture ring works? When attached to the body I see the same ammount of light with any apperture selelection. I cannot change the automatic/manual aperture lever in the objective as with my FD 85mm, does it mean that it is broken?. I need some help about using this objective....And finally, is $200 a good price for it? Thanks.

Rick, Thanks for the reply, I am not sure about the 'good exposures with the zoom at all apertures when using it in the "aperture priority" mode'. I will try several setting and get the film developed and reply at a later date.7. From : Doug Nelson (douglasfoto@hotmail.com)

If you want FD lenses, try keh.com. For information on other makers' lenses that are sometimes just as good or BETTER, look at http://people.smu.edu/rmonagha/third/index.html. This site is dedicated to third-party lenses. Let me give you an example. I wanted a 28 that gives NO distortion. Canons come close, but in urban architectual shots, I want no curved walls or rooflines. I read a review of a 28 f2 Kiron (the same company who made the original legendary Vivitar Series 1 lenses) and it claimed no distortion, and superb resolution. I just bought one at Adorama.com.8. hi jeff: i can't say for sure, but the auto-aperture exposure control modes (shutter priority and program) depend on the linkage geometry in the lens being identical to canon's factory specs: the lens is set to "A", which is the same as f/22 or so, and the body selects the desired aperture by halting the stop-down mechanism partway through its travel at the position representing, say, f/5.6 on the canon factory lens. it's possible for aftermarket lenses to vary a little bit at these intermediate positions, especially if the lens has been serviced and adjusted, and the positioning is quite critical. unless the camera also has off-the-film metering (ie, olympus), the meter has no way of knowing that the lens didn't stop at the expected aperture, so the exposure could be off in either direction. do you get good exposures with the zoom at all apertures when using it in the "aperture priority" mode? rick :)=

I have a Canon A-1 with a Vivitar zoom lens (something like 75~210mm) with macro function. With the camera on auto aperature and shutter speed, a picture from the zoom lens of the same subject as a picture with my Canon 50mm lens is dark and less sharp. The zoom lens seems to be working, the aperature blades move, and the other mechanics seem to function. Any ideas as to why the darker results?
