Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. Hey thanx to you all who sent emails to my desperate plea for FD lenses, particularly Macros... But it seems that all you Aussies out there have remained quiet, so if you're an Aussie and you have any lenses (FD) that you want to get rid of, or have any good ideas about getting lenses or whatever, then drop us a line! Thanx guys!

Kurt,

Spectra Coating & Super Spectra Coating (read multi coating).

Its only a concern on breach lock FD lenses as I'm told that all boyonet mount FD lenses are SSC except the 50mm f/1.8. Ihad thought that all bayonet mounts were SSC until Terry informed me otherwise.

Terry, how are you? Its been a while.

TomR.

I relatively new to SLR photography and I was wondering what does S.C. and S.C.C. mean on a camera lens?

Elizabeth,

I don't have any Canon breach lock lenses (silver ring) but have non Canon lenses of that type mount. The operation you describe is normal, as is the operation you describe on the Canon bayonet mount (with the locking button),

To be sure, engege the aperture ring to the "A" position, mount it on the camera, move the aperture off the "A" position and engage the stop down lever on the left side front of the camera. Now when you change apertures with the aperture ring you should see the aperture opening or closing. Also, disengage the stop down lever before moving the aperture ring back to the "A" position.

Shoot a roll of film, using both lenses, and record you shutter speeds, apertures and shooting mode. On the test roll you should take some frames in both AE and full manual modes. Recording the shutter speeds etc., will let you show a shop what problem you're having, if any, if return is not an option.

The Canon FD system was designed to allow full aperture metering & viewing.

Let us know how things go & welcome to the Canon family.

TomR.

I've just bought a Canon AE1 through e bay which is supposed to be in full working order, but there appears to be a problem with both of the lenses.

On my PK system, looking at just the lenses, if you set the aperture to say f16, you can see the overlapping bits of metal inside the lens, and then when you move a lever the aperture opens right up. Now on one of the canon FD lenses, the 50mm f 1.8 with the silver bayonet ring that you have to move round to get it to lock onto the camera, the aperture never closes, whatever you set it to it always apperas to be open. And with the other, the 135mm f 3.5 lens, which has a release button instead of the silver bayonet ring, it is always in the small aperture position, it never opens, but when attached to the camera, even at minimum aperture the view through the viewfinder is totally bright and clear so presumably it must be opening up on the camera? In both cases, the lever moves freely, it just doesn't seem to do anything.

Have I been sold two faulty lenses?

Liz

I have a Canon AE-1 program, but havent used it in maybe 15 years. I would like to get into photography and know that this is a great camera. Can anyone help as to how I can go about to get it in good shape? And I was thinking about getting a zoom lens as well but have no idea about them. Can anyone help me in getting started in all this? Thanks so much. Mike
