Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. I'm hearing rave reviews of the breech-mount 50-mm f1.4 Canon lens that Canon made before the SSC coatings came out. It has a chrome ring on the front of the barrel. The resolution is said to be incredibly good, even by Canon standards. It may, however, favor resolution at the expense of contrast. Can anyone verify or debunk this report? I bought one, anyway.

1) Does anyone know when Nikon started constructing their 80-200mm zoom lenses with ED glass? I have heard that they may have used the material prior to marketing (and labeling)as such.

2) Is there any reference table that can be used to date various Nikkor lenses by their serial numbers?

Would appreciate any feedback on either...

Ken

I am trying to locate a reputable on line dealer for Zuiko lens, namely 35-70mm auto zoom 3.5-4.8. It appears that they are nowhere to be found. Can anybody suggest a dealer? I did find something on e-bay but I really don’t want to go through that hassle of bidding and then watching to see what happens. I just want to make the purchase and be done with it. Why are Zuikos so difficult to get?

I have recently acquired a nice old A1 with a whole load of screw-in lenses. I think they're Pentax mount. The camera came with a P-type mount adaptor.

I can't work out how to set the aperture though. On one of the lenses (a wide angle) there doesn't appear to be any mechanism to do so. On the zoom lens, the aperture seems to be coupled to a pin on the base of the mount, but this doesn't make any contact with the FD mount adaptor at all, so the aperture always stays wide open.

Turning the aperture ring on both of these also does nothing.

Can anyone help a newbie out?!!

Thanks,
Howard.

Hi All

I have made extensive use of a Canon FD 200mm macro over the years. The lens handles superbly, focuses to 1:1, has a tripod collar etc....it's excellent except I don't get pin sharp images. I'm very careful with my technique - tripod, cable release etc - but still I'm disappointed. May be I'm suffering from mirror bounce? In addition when stopped down (F16-32) there is obvious vignetting (diffraction?) in the corners. I'd be very interested to hear if others have noticed the same problems. Should I get the lens serviced or are these just characteristics of this particular model.

When using the 200 2.8 FD telephoto with my t-80 set to fast action I get a RED DIAMOND LED in the viewfinder just below the green P. I can't find what this means in the online manuals. Anyone know?? Please and thanks, jr

My wonderful FE Nikon has died. The electronic shutter is kaput and it seems to make more sense to replace it than to repair it. I'm looking for recommendations of the best Nikon model to buy. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO USE MY OLD LENSES FROM THE FE. Thanks so much for any assistance you can offer ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------
