Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

I have a rather old Nikon 4004S with 35-70 mm zoom lens. I am looking to add a 70-180/200mm f4.5/5.6 zoom (Nikon, Sigma, Tamaron). Any suggestions on a good lens below $250 which can fit the 4004S mount. Thanks, Raj

TO WILSON WONG: Basically, most lenses (except macro) suffered from slight curvature of field (lens flatness) on the extreme corners although great pains are taken by each manufacturer to minimize them as much as possible. Then again, a 28mm wide-angle, with its short focal length, has wider depth of field, and thus the focusing may not be that precise. Deeper zone depth of field may make an overall image look sharper on the viewfinder but it is also responsible for wrong estimation of the exact sharpness. It has nothing to do with the Fuji 200 film or any film up to ISO 800 or 1000. However, an ISO 1600 film will degrade the overall image quality with coarse grain even if the lens is sharply focused.

Jeff - there are in fact no less than 8 different Nikkor 300/2.8 made for you to chose from! 4 MF and 4 AF versions. Refer to http://home.ait.ac.nz/staff/rvink/nikon.html

TO JEFF BOWEN: You can try to look for a used Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF lens from Keh Camera Broker at its website located at http://wwww.keh.com/ This lens was discontinued sometime ago and used versions may not be easy to come by either. There are also three types of AF Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 which are available as used equipment. The first is the AF Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF (without AF motor), the second is the AF-I Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF and the third is the familar AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF. Manual focus is possible with your FM camera and the F4 is able to utilize AF on all three versions.

I shoot sports for a local newspaper. I am looking for information on the Nikon 300 2.8 manual focus lens. I have used a friend's 300 4.5 EDIF but it seems too slow for night time football even with a flash. I can't spent a fortune. What should I look for? I have an FM2 and an a newly purchased F4. I don't have the $$$ for the auto focus version. Jeff

'Anti-Canon' ? Pheeww.. That is new. I thought all these while they have been labelled me as 'anti-Pentax', 'anti-Olympus' and even 'anti-Leica' etc.. No. I am just interested in photography AS A WHOLE, I don't have any preferences as far as camera system is concerned. Where I have already spent so much investment into one system over the years, it will sound a little stupid if I am telling you I am abandoned my old system and switching to another entirely new setup (Well, I am not a 'pro' and it is just a healthy thinking hobby of mine but if someone wants to 'subsitise' a BIG portion for me to change to another more 'interesting' system, let me know...hehe..) Thus, naturally, you will start writing things from the system you know the best, right ? Well, it is just like if you were to ask me to start constructing a site for Minox camera, for an instance, I WILL NOT do it because other than I know the camera is made in Germany, compact, cute looking and practical (at times), I will be quite 'blur' in relation to other operational things ... so, excure me, brothers, just enjoy what you are seeing on your screen while I still have the energy and 'passion' to finish off the few remaining sites before I call it a day...
